yeah....
well it started at one corner where it was very obvious that the carpet was molding, so that was already out, but the wife and I came up with the tiling idea so that we could get rid of the rest of it.
I have a friend who tiled his entire four bedroom house, including the Great Room. At the threshold from the kitchen to the master bedroom, the tiles were dark and light...dark on the kitchen side, light on the bedroom side. They were done in half squares (triangles) and it is a really good look.
The nice thing is that when the carpet went out, so did the worst of the odors.
