LIFE STYLE EXTRA (UK) - Mel Gibson received a standing ovation at a preview for his new movie, 'Apocalypto'.
The actor-director - who has kkept a low profile since making anti-Semitic comments and being charged with drink-driving - made a surprise appearance at a screening of the Mayan adventure film at Fantastic Fest in Austin, Texas on Friday (22.09.06).
Addressing the crowd, Mel drew parallels between the movie's subject matter and today's world saying: "The precursors to a civilization that's going under are the same, time and time again.
"What's human sacrifice if not sending guys off to Iraq for no reason?"
The two hour long version shown at the event was a rough cut of the finished product di not have any sound effects or musical score.
Mel was recently invited to meet with three prominent American Jewish groups, after his apology for making anti-Semitic remarks when he was arrested for drunk driving.
The 'Lethal Weapon' actor's outburst happened as he was being questioned by a California police officer after he was caught speeding through Malibu, California, while under the influence.
The 1939 Club, New York's Museum of Jewish Heritage and a Beverly Hills rabbi have all reached out and asked Mel to meet with them.

Austin = Liberal Heaven. It's the only place in Texas where he could get a standing ovation.
"Is it written somewhere that prior agreement with somebody on a particular issue is an obligation for future agreement on everything?"
There's no law against having a herd mentality, but it sure isn't something to be proud of.
It's discouraging that he's still coming out with this nonsense.
Still, I've seen most of his movies, and have liked what I've seen.
So, let's hope he hasn't gone around the bend in the actual movie.
But not the ga-gas on FR who hailed him as some reincarnation of Barry Goldwater or something.
Mel is no dyed-in-the-wood conservative. He has faith...and is pro-life and I'm grateful. But he has never been a fiscal or pro-Iraq War conservative.
I still like him, and most of his movies.
I think (and pray) he's wrong about Iraq, however.
Apocalypse Now? Oh, no, it's Apoxylips Mel at the end of the world, for no other reason than the drink has been cut off.
This is why I don't care what actors have to say any more than somebody who runs a minimart has to say.
If we lose to terrorism, Israel and America lose, and since Mel hates Jews, it's comes as no surprise that he'd be willing to sacrifice a few Jews in Israel.

You got it. The movie is likely a dud, and Mel is just drumming up controversy and publicity in a bid to sell some tickets.

You know he had to put in the iraq dig just to suck up to the powers to be in hollyweird. Still, that shows a man with no principles.

I wonder how many of you guys are like me and will not see his film now that he is spewing anti-Americanism in time of war. I don't care how good the film is. It isn't worth my $12.
