I had a friend who was a novice. But decided not to become a nun. I think that is why they have that period of time...to make sure that is the decision they want to make. I'm not Catholic so someone else might verify.

Many young women enter a religious order as a "postulant" or "novice," in order to see whether religious life, or a particular religious, is really for them. "Testing a vocation" is the technical term :-).

It's not unusual for the trial period to last from 5 to 10 years, during which an aspirant can leave the order for any reason, or be asked to leave, if the superiors believe she isn't in the right place.

Marriage is a religious vocation, too. I hope the couple is very happy. (Though I must admit that the combination of "Wayne" and "rock guitarist" would make me very nervous, if I were the mother of the bride!)
