The Ryder Cup has begun with the four-ball matches at the K Club in Ireland.
I suggest we adopt a new tactic cuz the Euros aren't falling for it.
Garcia has about half a dozen solo wins over here, and a few over in Europe. He just hasn't won a big one yet. I doubt he ever will.
Yeah, I was referring to a major tournament. I like him, but talking smack to the best player in history about a team event isn't exactly credible when he has done nothing on his own.
US down in 3 matches currently and up in 1. If they don't draw even for the day they will lose tomorrow.
Tiger just hits a driver off the deck 288.....missed the green but a long wa to hit one off the fairway.
Johnny miller just said he thinks Lehman should sit down Woods and Mickelson as they are doing nothing. That could be interesting...
Two fine English players - particularly Casey, who just won the World Matchplay tournament so is obviously good at this format.
You base that on what, exactly? He's still only 26-years-old. Faldo didn't win his first major till he was 30 and he won three Opens and three Masters.
Simple....go look at how he does paired w/ Tiger on Sunday. After seven years of experience, he goes even further in the tank.
Luke Donald had his first chance at the PGA, will he get better after experiencing the Sunday madness...we'll see. Sergio has not.
His putting has not improved in 7 years either. He can be the best tee to green, but he his putter is a problem
I'd say one word..."putter".
I'd be quite happy to bet either of you that Sergio will win at LEAST one major. He's far better than most of the guys who do win them. Apart from Tiger, of course. Donald will probably win one too sooner or later.
I would love to see him..
1..tighten up his swing
2..actually grip the club with his right hand before he initiates his backswing
3..maybe try a belly or long putter.
I wasn't aware of Faldo's putting problems at the Masters as you mentioned but aside from that, the only person I ever saw control a balky putter was Bang-em-Hard Langer. And what he had to do to accomplish that feat was a scary thing to watch :)
Langer used to have terrible problems with short putts. But he did work out a way to get the job done. Not looking good for the US. Down in three matches and only up in one. Both the American teams put the ball in the water at the 15th, which was pretty unforgiveable considering they were both all square at the time.
YUP..looks like 10.5 to 5.5..and that would certainly be insurmountable.
Could be time to rerack for 08.
The Irish did a marvelous job of the course - even Palmer admitted some of the changes made were fine with him....
They are having a good turn at the weather too which is fine.
What is not fine to me are the tentative "knocks" at the American team by the NBC announcers.
I'm tired of this bash USA cheerleading going on - even from our own side in international competition.
I saw it at the Olympics and now this.
No wonder athletes are not "feeling the love".
We're used to losing so try to find something positive to say about our band of losers! Americans are brought up to think second place is not good enough.
No tactic will work. The Europeans are simply better than the Americans. Outside of Tiger and Phil, the US doesn't have much. If this turns out to be a repeat of the drubbing of 2004, there can be no other conclusion made.
Agreed. Some day Sergio will win a major. He'll probably end up with 2-3 when it's all said and done. And good point about my favorite player, Faldo, who would have won more had he had someone like Leadbetter early on.
Thank you for your reply.
I am highly competitive and protective of our young athletes who journey to other countries to be insulted for their talents.
Sport has changed and not for the better. Commentators seem to reflect the deeper dislike and it is not good.
My concern in posting was to ascertain if I was being overly negative and expecting rudeness (more than the usual patriotic fan in the stands things which is wonderful - home team and all that)...but your confirming the same thing gives me rest.
I enjoy watching great sports like the Ryder Cup which bring people from other lands to compete - and I know the U.S. teams are trained to be focused, but I doubt they are feeling very comfortable in Ireland.
I think American audiences for the Ryder Cup have always been supportive of both teams when it is played in the U.S.
The British commentators are actually more supportive of the Americans than the American commentators!
American fans are very fair. The only blackspot occurred in 1999 but that wasn't the fans' fault. It was the players and their wives who charged onto the pitch when the match wasn't over.
