Humiliation does have its price, at least in college football. For Middle Tennessee State, it was a whopping $500,000 -- the sum the University of Maryland paid the Blue Raiders to come to Byrd Stadium two weeks ago and, presumably, take a whipping. That was a relative bargain for the Terrapins -- even if they bought only a 24-10 victory, not a rout -- considering the spike in the purchase price of a patsy.

The Globetrotters never had a problem!
Earlier this year, Troy State was leading by 7 in the 4th quarter against 9th ranked Florida State when they eventually lost by 7.
In Basketball 2 years ago, NY at Binghampton lead UNC chapel hill the entire game when the referees made a couple outrageous calls giving UNC the game.
At first I read "football pasties" and I had a very different idea what this was about...
Sometimes it is called sandbagging. I used to be very good at tennis, but also played for recreation. When against an inferior player, I would work on my weak shots and play to their strengths. In competition, I would cover my weaknesses, and try to expose his.
TALLAHASSEE, Fla. -- Florida State's Buster Davis picked a great time for his first career interception.
A leaping grab by the 5-foot-10 linebacker set up a 4-yard touchdown run by Joe Surratt with 1:56 left as the ninth-ranked Seminoles rallied late to escape with a 24-17 victory Saturday over Troy.
The Seminoles (2-0) scored two touchdowns in the final 6:12 to avoid what might have been the most embarrassing home loss in coach Bobby Bowden's 31 years coaching at the school.
"I didn't begin to panic until ... the fourth quarter," Bowden said. "It was like having a nightmare. Like having a bad dream."
But Davis got his coach, and teammate Chris Davis, off the hook when he intercepted Omar Haugabook's third-down pass at the Troy 29 moments after Florida State had tied it at 17.
"We knew we had to get the ball back," the 240-pound Buster Davis said. "We got a great pass rush and I think he hurried his pass and I was able to make a big play."
Haugabook completed 28 of 46 passes for 219 yards, but was intercepted three times, the last time with only seconds left when linebacker Geno Hayes also came up with his first career pick.
5-foot-10 and 240 pounds?!? Good grief!
It's going to be one of the few wins FSU gets this year. Ok maybe they'll get by Duke.
Hey, at least Maryland didn't lose to Rutgers.
MD, still reeling over the near-loss to Furman last week.
Ask Colorado about Montana State.
I played football at a smaller college and we did the patsy thing. It was awesome!!! We got money in the budget for scholarships. It helped us recruit better players that may have signed with other schools and helped a lot in conference play. Did we win no but we did qualify for the national play-offs. It was great just to compete!
