Can't ping other computers in my network

Posted on 09/12/2006 12:24:35 PM PDT by rudy45

I have several computers in a small home network. The router is Belkin Wireless G router. My ISP uses static IP addressing. When I do ipconfig /all on my computer, it shows me a DHCP server address. It's the same address as my default gateway, 192.168.2.1.

A PC that is ethernet attached to the router also has a printer attached, via USB. I cannot print to this printer, in fact I can't "see" the PC that it's attached to, from my computer, even though I set up a workgroup for both PCs, with the same workgroup name.

As an experiment, I tried pinging the other computer from my computer. I found that from my computer (192.168.2.4) I can neither ping the printer-attached PC 192.168.2.2 nor can I ping my OWN computer. I can, however, ping the gateway. Is lack of ability to ping a problem?

Is this issue related to my inability to "see" the other computer when I try to use the printer on the other PC? Thanks.

I really wish people would let that meme die.

Since he is talking about networked computers, I thought the question was reasonable, because you may not be able to access the printer if you are not logged into the network.

Nothing ever dies at FR. It just gets recycled, including the use of the word meme.

Windows XP firewall maybe? It'll do that to you.

Nope, Windows Firewall is turned off. I do, however, run Norton Internet Security (NIS). But, the pings still fail even when NIS is disabled.
