Diana Wanted to Become America's First Lady

By KATE SNOW

NEW YORK, Sept. 12, 2006 — In his new blockbuster book, "The Way We Were," Paul Burrell says that Princess Diana had ambitions to become the first lady of the United States.

"She knew a billionaire in America, and she suggested to him that if they were together. … His yearning to run in politics could lead to the White House, that one day she could be the first lady and she'd visit Britain on a state visit," Diana's former butler and confidant said to "Good Morning America's" Kate Snow in an exclusive interview.

Burrell said that in the mid-1990s Diana had dreamed of following in the footsteps of stylish first ladies.

"She's been a huge fan of Jackie Onassis for years, and a huge admirer, too, of Nancy Reagan and Hillary Clinton. But Jackie Onassis had the edge. And she fantasized about redecorating the White House," Burrell said.

"It wasn't a fantasy. It could have been a reality. It really could. They would have been a golden couple."

While the mystery man in New York had political connections, he was not the love of Princess Diana's life.

Neither was Prince Charles or Dodi Al Fayed, Burrell said, who dismisses claims that Diana was engaged to Fayed when they died in a Paris car crash.

"She was not going to marry Dodi Al Fayed, because there was someone else in her life. She had a soul mate, and she'd fallen in love with someone else," he told Snow.

Hi All-

She always struck me as a bit bizarre and whining all the time. Horribly tragic crash and everything, but I don't understand the fascination.

Looks like Diana's had a love of astrology as Nancy Regan did. Who breaks up with a person over that?

A "Weird Al" classic:

Gonna tell you a story
About Chuck and Diane
Couple British kids from
The palace at Buckingham

Chuckie wants to grow up
And be a polo star
And ride his little horsies
All around the backyard, oh yeah

You know they really paid their dues
I said hey, lawdy mama
They got them Buckingham blues

Now Chuckie goes hunting
And leaves Diane alone
So she fixes her hair
And she talks on the Princess Phone

Chuckie's still tryin' to figure out
What his job's supposed to be
And Diane's the fashion leader
Of the aristocracy

I said hey, Lady Di
Tell me where'd you get them shoes, ah
Well, hey nonny nonny
Looks like you got them Buckingham blues

Aw, bein' heir to the throne, well
It must be awful hard
Gotta pose for pictures
Out on the front yard

And Lady Di, well
She must have it pretty rough
Gotta hang around the house all day
Makin' babies and stuff

Another game of croquet
Then they're off on a Caribbean cruise
Well hey bop-a-re-bop
They really got them Buckingham blues

Ah, tell the truth, now, tell the truth
Wow

I got my mojo workin'
yeah, woo, don't help me now
Ah, hurt me mama, whoa, ah

They don't serve no Twinkies
With their afternoon tea
Never had a dinner
Made by Chef Boyardee

Bein' in the spotlight
Is a hard life to choose
Diane drops half a pound
It's on the six o'clock news, oh yeah

Those kids have really paid their dues
Oh, what a royal pain it is
When you got them Buckingham blues

she'd fallen in love with someone else

Uh oh. Dodi's daddy isn't going to like that. Does he still have that shrine up of them in the basement of Harrods?

I don't. She was reasonably attractive and had good teeth for a Brit.

Assuming that you're a guy,are you *honestly* trying to convince me that she would have had to beg you????

Oops...also stipulating that you were unmarried at the time.

GW had no biological children. She is, however, related to him. A very, very distant cousin I believe. I think I remember that a Washington was buried in her family crypt and that he was a collateral ancestor of GW. Not sure about the details, however. And I believe she was also related to Churchill.

What is the fascination with Diana? It's like a huge cult. I just don't understand, could someone enlighten me?

I'm with you here. I always thought of her as a spoiled brat. Good looking but not the beauty she's portrayed and sexually profligate. She was not a role model, she was more a poster girl for glam tramps.

Actually, looking back at the Forbes article, it appears to be the whole Kennedy family estate valued at $850 - of which John John may not have received much if anything. His mother's estate wasn't worth a lot. But, they had to own quite a bit. I wonder what he himself was worth?

For some, unknown reason, certain people catch the public's fancy, and there is no way to undo it. Other examples are Jacqueline Kennedy Onassis, Marilyn Monroe, Greta Garbo, and Judy Garland. Some of it is beauty, some the fascination of a glamorous life, and often, the tragedy of someone dying young or being seen as a tragic figure.

In Diana's case it was because after years of the frumpy Windsors, there actually was a princess who LOOKED like a real princess should look. She received a great deal of publicity, and her death was a real shocker, since most of us don't think that princesses will die in car wrecks.

I hope you understand that the interest in her isn't totally rational. I myself read all of these stories with an odd sort of fascination, knowing full well it really isn't important but somehow still wondering "what if?" It's a very strange reaction, but there you have it.

I keep thinking about how I could have made big bucks once upon a time by creating a "Princess Channel" for cable -- all royalty, all the time.

Think about it... the demographic would be gullible women, a veritable treasure trove for advertisers. On top of that, the PC could have its own collectibles (plates, etc.) for sale as supplemental income.
