Diana Wanted to Become America's First Lady
Paul Burrell with Princess Diana. (ABC News)
By KATE SNOW
NEW YORK, Sept. 12, 2006 In his new blockbuster book, "The Way We Were," Paul Burrell says that Princess Diana had ambitions to become the first lady of the United States.
"She knew a billionaire in America, and she suggested to him that if they were together. His yearning to run in politics could lead to the White House, that one day she could be the first lady and she'd visit Britain on a state visit," Diana's former butler and confidant said to "Good Morning America's" Kate Snow in an exclusive interview.
Burrell said that in the mid-1990s Diana had dreamed of following in the footsteps of stylish first ladies.
"She's been a huge fan of Jackie Onassis for years, and a huge admirer, too, of Nancy Reagan and Hillary Clinton. But Jackie Onassis had the edge. And she fantasized about redecorating the White House," Burrell said.
"It wasn't a fantasy. It could have been a reality. It really could. They would have been a golden couple."
While the mystery man in New York had political connections, he was not the love of Princess Diana's life.
Neither was Prince Charles or Dodi Al Fayed, Burrell said, who dismisses claims that Diana was engaged to Fayed when they died in a Paris car crash.
"She was not going to marry Dodi Al Fayed, because there was someone else in her life. She had a soul mate, and she'd fallen in love with someone else," he told Snow.

Diana, first Lady. Right. I always thought she was an ignorant TWIT. This proves it.
The sad thing is that she was probably right. JFK Jr. would have run for carpetbagging Senator from New York and then have gone for the brass ring.
Come on,she was flat out friggin hot...she was. Pretty and sophisticated, dressed like a Queen and beautiful....JMHO!
No, it came about ten months before. JFK Jr. was married on September 21, 1996. (There's no reason I remember that except it was my tenth wedding anniversary). Diana was killed at the end of August '97.

The Kennedys married in 1996 and presumably dated for a period of time prior to their marriage. Diana died in 1997.
ROFL. Well, too bad ya missed your chance.
I'm not with you.
I thought that JFK Jr basically grew up in NY.If that's the case then he wouldn't have been a carpetbagger. And if he had run for the White House after having been a Governor or senator,my guess is that he would have made it.
Of all the Kennedy males that I know of,he and his old man seem to be/have been the least repulsive...by far. And yes,I'm familiar with his old man's history with women.
Don't forget Christie Brinkley!
You have to be kidding. Princess Di had so much more ooomph than Carolyn.
I love Fergie!
"Billionaire" is not the word someone would use to describe Kennedy in this context, even if it were technically true. He would have been a political golden boy or scion or media star or something, but not billionaire.
That does prove the point, even though that dress is a Victor Edelstein, not Versace. :)
And Jackie had an aparment in New York for many years so maybe he wouldn't gotten the carpetbagger tag
This entire conversation is silly of course, but it's better than actually, gasp, working!
IMHO, she was average at best and odd looking at worst.
Emphasis on H.
