SAN FRANCISCO (Business 2.0 Magazine) -- Judging by the grief that Microsoft is getting over delays in the release of Windows Vista, and the buzz surrounding the price it plans to charge for the next generation operating system, you'd think we were all hankering to get our hands on this hot new piece of software.
Don't believe the hype: There won't be lines around the block at midnight when Vista hits store shelves early next year, analysts say.

"I don't expect anyone's going to be camping out at Best Buy waiting for this product," says Citigroup equity research analyst Brent Thill. "I think the pace of adoption will be slower than the market expects."
They can get it for you wholesale
Microsoft (Charts) gets more than 80 percent of its $13 billion in annual Windows revenue from PC makers, who install the operating system on new PCs. The cost of Windows - estimated at around $70 - is included in the price we pay when we buy a new PC. The proportion of people who buy copies of Windows at retail to install on their PCs is vanishingly small.
And the version of Windows that those retail customers have on their PC hardly figures into the equation. By and large, we buy a new PC when we need another one.

I've never had a single crash ever running Windows XP on my two computers at home.
Maybe its you.
Mark
Same here....on three computers.....two laptops and one desktop.......
I have a firewire on my router, Linksys. Besides that its just the built in security stuff included with Windows. I've never had a penetration.
I think when you install different software for this and that and whatever, it is that, which causes dysfunction.
"Maybe its (sic) you"
Nope. Ruled that out. I didn't install any software that wasn't already tested to work on the images. These images were put together by the IT and CS gurus on campus.
And a lot of people had problems with Windows going down. The only difference between me and them was that I became fed up with it--to the point where I switched operating systems.
Not to mention that virtually everyone I know has had at least one major Windows crash. My mom's been lucky; though I had to nuke and reinstall Windows the week before.
And a couple of my relatives actually just went out and bought Macs. Windows kept crashing on their systems (never did figure out why)--irritated 'em so much they swore never to buy another pee-cee.
Finally with Windows, I can't rule out failure of the OS whereas with Linux and Mac, most problems are in fact user error.
Yeah, it's not some wizzy Wizard that does everything for ya... and all you need to know is which mouse button is which.
You need to be able to READ and follow directions... you need to know your way around a KEYBOARD.
Yeah, I'm thinking Squid-Cache was a little too much for you to chew on. ;-) That's fine. Have fun with your Windows toys.
I'm sure you'll get real far in life with your arrogance. Good luck with that.

Grapevine has it RTM in time for the Barcelona conference in mid-Nov.
Thanks for the heads up...
Will probably have to run it in either qemu or VMware (only have 256 RAM on my system, so I can't actually install it)...
Definitely worth a look 8^)
