I think river otters are pretty adaptable... we have them in our gully at the beach house and they go out and hunt in salt water. They come up on the dock to eat their catch in the pre-dawn early morning.

Ours isn't always black like that, usually more green and the bone and shell bits are white. I don't know what that guy's been eating.

Well, there are otters in the Everglades for sure, which are pretty close to where I see the droppings, probably 10 miles to the edge.

We love to watch them, they're very cute of course, and they cavort like clowns when there's a group.

I read a chapter on otters in a local wildlife book, and it said otters swim up underneath seabirds and pull them under and drown them!

It just seems so ~cold~. Swimmin' along like a duck in a pond and ~bloop~.

Don't know if we have salt water otters on the East coast, but we have both alligators and crocodiles as well as a few South American caimans (broken out of the isolation cages at Miami International Airport). Perhaps they are messing things up?
