Welcome to The Hobbit Hole!

Mawwage is what bwings us togethew today!

New verse:

Upon the hearth the fire is red,
Beneath the roof there is a bed;
But not yet weary are our feet,
Still round the corner we may meet
A sudden tree or standing stone
That none have seen but we alone.
Tree and flower and leaf and grass,
Let them pass! Let them pass!
Hill and water under sky,
Pass them by! Pass them by!

Still round the corner there may wait
A new road or a secret gate,
And though we pass them by today,
Tomorrow we may come this way
And take the hidden paths that run
Towards the Moon or to the Sun.
Apple, thorn, and nut and sloe,
Let them go! Let them go!
Sand and stone and pool and dell,
Fare you well! Fare you well!

Home is behind, the world ahead,
And there are many paths to tread
Through shadows to the edge of night,
Until the stars are all alight.
Then world behind and home ahead,
We’ll wander back to home and bed.
Mist and twilight, cloud and shade,
Away shall fade! Away shall fade!
Fire and lamp, and meat and bread,
And then to bed! And then to bed!

You've undervalued your opinion at two cents.

The land has been under many empires, of course, the British being the last. But the British, who only used the Zionists to subvert Sykes Picot, made it clear through their policies and their official communications that the British Mandate was a mistake and the land should belong to the Arabs and the Jews submit to the Arabs.

I completely support the Israelis.

First and foremost on the grounds that they have been a people who have never been protected. They have been oppressed and murdered at will. If the West will not protect them, they have every right to protect themselves. (Of course, they are not allowed to that either thanks to the West)

Last, I support them on your very well articulated grounds that the Palestinians, because of their use of terror, must not only lose, but must be beaten militarily (since the Arabs only understand strength). Ben Gurion was criticized for use of overwhelming force against Arab raids, he replied that the Arabs must understand there is a harsh price to be paid for the taking of Jewish life. I agree, not only for Israel, but for our sakes.

Even though I understand why the coalition is fighting in the limited manner under the harsh restrictions imposed upon itself in Iraq, I disagree. Yes, we should be in Iraq, but the war should be as total as it was against the Germans and the Japanese.

Absolutely! Unfortunately, our State Department and Europe hold the Arab view and work hard to defeat Israel in a thousand ways not always visible to us who believe in Israel.

There is some truth in that.

There were no such thing as Palestinian Arabs. They were considered first, Ottomans, but more locally as Syrians.

During World War I, the British promised both the Jews and the Arabs their own independence. They were given the Mandate, Zionism took hold, then the British, believing the Arabs were the more natural allies (oil and the Suez Canal) worked against the Jews to the benefit of the Arabs.

Therefore, when UN 181 came (the partition) it was rejected because of the Islamic mindset. No to Jewish domination. So, they fought. The Palestinians were not organized so, the other "countries" fought against the Jews.

The war increased the Jewish presence in the land.

Some of the Arabs left because of Arab scare tactics, some left because the local effendis were the first to depart and left a leadership vacuum, and some left because the Haganah was very effective at their own scare tactics.

Now, the Palestinians are totally used as a political means to an end. They have one purpose. To drive Israel from the land. It is working.

Abba Eban said that. And it's true, but it is equally true that when they miss that opportunity, our State Department and the Europeans are quick to call "do over" and put their little "indiscretions" out of mind.

You are probably familiar with this story. If you are, then forgive my telling of it.

When the Israelis pulled out of Gaza (big mistake in my opinion) they left greenhouses that produced a large amount of fruits and vegetables.

The Jews offered to show the Palestinians how to use it. This offer was rebuffed very rudely.

The Palestinians march into Gaza and destroy the greenhouses.

Well, when the leadership realize what they have done, they go crying to Sharon that he needs to replace the greenhouses. No, Sharon says. Well, we'll rebuild them and you will come back here and show us how to use them. No, said the workers.

So the Palestinians go crying to the US and the Europeans who sent them millions to replace the greenhouses. Which have not been replaced, the money going for rockets (as the Europeans knew it would).

So, now, Southern Israel is under attack daily. Just this week on of those rockets crashed into a school killing a child. But Jewish children do not count as much in world opinion as a Palestinian child, sent (as you very well put it) on purpose to be cannon fodder so the world will be (and the world is only too happy to be) outraged at the Jews.

And the Palestinians are crying that they have no means to produce a GNP or give their young men work and they are starving and the Europeans and the Americans send them money by the buckets, which only goes to arm Hamas.

Yes, Lewis is very, very dense. When you make it through that, try his book Semites and Anti-Semites. You will find it very good too.

Ah! That's what I thought, but wasn't sure about.

I had read about the Haganah. Wasn't it that group that bombed the King David Hotel where the British were located, just before or after the UN decision? I think I read about that in the book "O, Jerusalem". I just requested that from our local library. Are there any other books you can recommend about the 19th and 20th century history of Palestine and Israel? By the way, what was it called before the British took over the place? Had it been called Palestine before then?

This one is a very small book. I happened to find it after wandering into a used bookstore in West Yellowstone, Montana, when we were out there on a vacation with the family.

I believe that the bombing was either the Irgun or possibly the Stern Gang, which used terrorism against British troops. The hagannah was more a militia.

The term Palestine was used by the Romans, after they destroyed the Temple and exiled the Jews in the first and second centuries AD. It is derived from Phillistines, the folks the early Israelites defeated under King David. It is a geographical term, and included everyone living in the area, whether Muslim Arab, Christian Arab, or Jew. Then the partition was derived to divide Palestinian Arabs, from Palestinian Jews. The leaders of the Palestinian Jews chose the name Israel for their state. The Palestinian Arabs refused to accept the partition, and insisted on sole control. Their leaders left the country, the neighboring Arabs attacked, Israel won.

The name Palestine was applied to this area after the failed Bar Kochba revolt. It comes from the administrative region of Syria Palestinia (the area was divided into three Palestinia's or administrative zones that came from the Romans and held in place during the Byzatine Empire.)

To the Muslims and to the Ottomans, it was just part of the Empire, but the locals were called Syrians to designate their place in the vast empire.

The Etzel (known as the Irgun) bombed the King David Hotel. It should be noted that the Palestinians use the bombing as the justification for their modern use of terror saying the are only copying the Jews. I reject that out of hand.

The King David Hotel, which served as headquarters for the British government offices. Ninety-one people died in the blast. The Etzel claimed that a telephone warning was issued and ignored. The British denied receiving a warning. At the official inquest, testimony was given by the Palestine Post operator that she had received the warning and telephoned the duty officer at the police station. Located next door to the King David was the French Consulate. The consulate staff testified that they had been warned that a blast was impending at the hotel, and they should open their windows in order to reduce casualties as well.

The definition of terrorism is the deliberate targeting of civilians to inspire fear or panic in hopes that the populace will force the government to capitulate to either the terrorists’ political, ideological, or religious demands.

O Jerusalem is a great book. I would also recommend Benjamin Netanyahu's A Durable Peace. If you like historical fiction, then Herman Wouk's The Hope and The Glory (2 separate books) are excellent reads and very factual.

The Haganah later became the IDF.
