Whaddya think he's got now?
He keeps trying to find squirrel proof ones!
We've never even tried to differentiate between squirrel food and bird food. We just put out a pile of seeds, and it's "first come, first served".
Sounds nice, doesn't it?
We have a woodchuck, prairie dog, whatever, in our back forty. Every now and then, he'll amble up into the yard to chew on the weeds. He's about 15" tall when he's on his haunches.
Could you please freepmail me your home address?
Do you hang your bird feeders from poles or tree branches? I hang mine from tree branches and use a "baffle", or plastic cover that you hang the bird feeder under. It swings freely above the feeder, and the squirrels just slide off if they attempt to get to the feeder, but they still have access to the seed that falls on the ground. You can get them anywhere they sell bird feeders.
If you have platform feeders, change to safflower seed; most squirrels don't eat that particular seed.
I've got them on shepherd's hooks. Our Wild Birds Unlimited recommended the baffles as well. I just haven't purchased them.
The bees drank all my hummingbird food. Never saw a hummingbird.
I'm not sure that shepherd's hooks have enough of an 'angle' to allow a baffle to swing freely. I've had some squirrels shimmy up the pole to get to the seed in the winter; that's when I just start putting out the dried ears of corn....
Heh. So they had bird seed with a side of corn.
We used to have *tons* of hummingbirds that would come to the feeder at home. It did take awhile for them to really notice, I think, though.
I've thought about setting one up here. It'd give the kitties something to watch. ;-) But there are so many yellow jackets around that I wonder if it'd just cause problems.
We had trouble with ants crawling into our hummingbird feeder! Steve started dipping the hook on top into vaseline before hanging it up and that took care of that!
When I get home, I'll post some pics of snakes we saw on our vacation in PA. I've never seen so many snakes in the wild before, ever! We came across a den of eastern mtn rattlers. Fortunately it was cold and I had a good zoom lens... the pics came out great. The other occasion was a garden full of garter snakes.
*shudder*
Environmental Technician
Aquaterra is evaluating candidates for employment in the Kansas City and Tulsa areas. Candidates will perform field work on environmental landfill projects. Duties include soil and groundwater sampling, soil compaction testing, and some Geoprobe® operation. Travel will be required at times.
You know, it's sad when you abandon a writing project for so long that you go back and re-read it and actually have no idea what's going to happen next as you read.
*insert popcorn gif*
At least I still found it interesting. Hopefully I'll actually get a move on with it this time.
That would be great! OB traveled quite a bit for years; the "gone two weeks, home a week" projects that lasted for several months were the worst for me, but he really enjoyed the work, so what ya going to do?
I'm hoping for the best...like a family-friendly environment that might let us all just go with him places. Like say he had to go to KC for 3-4 days...perhaps they'd pay a portion and then let us just pay the rest and go along? We could do our own thing while Steve did his.
It's a dream of ours, the desire of our heart, so to speak...and it's why we homeschool. So we can be a bit fancy-free.
I still want that little bit of land, too...and I figure if I have goats and chickens, I could hire and train a homeschooling teen to keep things going while we're gone...
I dunno...may be just pipe dreaming...but you never know!
Nothing wrong with dreaming!!
I wish I had a job like Ruthy's!
How could I go about getting a job like that, Ruthy? Couldn't I do what you do, but maybe just part time?
