Chicken-Fried SPAM
Spamarama Favorite
1 can SPAM luncheon meat
2 Eggs
1 cup Milk [plus more for gravy]
1 tsp Garlic Powder
Black and Red Pepper to taste
Worcestershire Sauce to taste
3 cup Flour [plus 4 tbl more for gravy]
Vegetable Oil
2-3 cup Milk [for gravy]
Open the can and dry the spam on a paper towel. Cut into equal slices about 1/4 inch thick. Set aside.
In a shallow dish, mix eggs, 1 cup milk, garlic powder, black and red pepper to taste, and enough Worcestershire sauce to "turn the whole thing a little browner than the yellow pages. In a recloseable bag, place about 3 cups of flour. In the meantime, put 1 inch of vegetable oil in a cast-iron skillet and turn the heat on.
Dip the spam steak in the liquid batter, then shack it in the bag with the flour. Repeat the whole process one more time. Remember, the goal is to mask the spam with crunchy batter and gravy. When the oil is beginning to smoke, drop the the battered spam into it. When the first side is brown, flip 'em. When the second side is done, remove from grease and place on a paper towel to drain.
White Gravy:
To make white gravy, pour out the remaining grease, leaving about 4 tablespoons. While the skillet is still hot, stir in 4 tablespoon of the flour. When it is mixed with the grease well, pour in enough milk to smooth out the mixture. Add a little more milk than you think you need so that you can let it cook down some. When it's to the thickness you like, serve up the Spam with a liberal dose of the white gravy on top.
That sounds truly repulsive.
I'm just trying to be helpful.
Heh!! You know what...I have actually been to Spamarama. More than once.
Ok, I've set you guys up here beside me on the couch. Got my sweats on. Got TTT EE cookies that OT gave me. Got a chicken breast set to boil. Got coffee in a carafe. Got a hugh pile of VW catalogs and repair manuals handy. Got my reading glasses and cell phone.
I'm set till Steve gets home.
Very good. You'll feel better in no time :~)
oh no...wait...that was me...
Just got the soup finished. I ended up making chicken and wild rice soup. The wild rice is almost the last of what I got in Minnesota and I'd made it and frozen it, so it only took a few minutes.
It's delicious. And soothing.
Good idea, OT.
Matthew said that God sent this cloudy miserable weather because He knew I wouldn't stay home and get well otherwise.
Heh heh!
Blame Old Man Willow.
I have to admit, I managed to fall asleep in the theater when we went to see ROTK. Only for a few minutes, though.
But we'd had to get up at about two-thirty to get to the airport the day before, so I guess I'm kinda justified.
Chicken soup....good for what ails ya.
About the broken toothpicks. Did you completely fill the hole or fill it just enough for the screw to grab hold of?
We would try to jam in as many toothpicks as possible, so the screw would have plenty of wood to bite into. Did OB mention dipping the toothpicks in white glue (like Elmer's) before you put them in the hole and then letting the whole mess dry first? That produces a much more satisfactory base for the screw.
I was going to ask how you got the glue in there. :)
I've got some carpenter's glue I was going to use. Can you jam whole toothpicks in there or did you break 'em in half first? I'm thinking I should use the flat ones rather than the round ones.
I'm thinking about letting the glue dry overnight if I can leave that top hinge missing one screw okay.
Carpenter glue would be great!! I'm pretty sure we jammed the whole toothpick in and then broke/rasped them off, though I'm sure breaking them in half would work fine (just more chance to get glue all over your fingers). Flat toothpicks are what we used too.
Drying overnight is always a good idea. The weatherweenies say both Saturday and Sunday are going to be beautiful, so you could easily make it a two-stage project.
I thought I'd put the toothpicks in on Saturday and replace the screw on Sunday. I've got some more shims around somewhere so I can give the door a little more support overnight.
You know, I watched them a few weeks ago on that really rainy weekend. I worked in the home office all day and watched themovies.
There were parts of ROTK EE that I don't think I ever saw until that day.
Izzit time to go home yet??
