The Hobbit Hole XXXI - Mawwage is what bwings us togethew today!

Welcome to The Hobbit Hole!

Mawwage is what bwings us togethew today!

New verse:

Upon the hearth the fire is red,
Beneath the roof there is a bed;
But not yet weary are our feet,
Still round the corner we may meet
A sudden tree or standing stone
That none have seen but we alone.
Tree and flower and leaf and grass,
Let them pass! Let them pass!
Hill and water under sky,
Pass them by! Pass them by!

Still round the corner there may wait
A new road or a secret gate,
And though we pass them by today,
Tomorrow we may come this way
And take the hidden paths that run
Towards the Moon or to the Sun.
Apple, thorn, and nut and sloe,
Let them go! Let them go!
Sand and stone and pool and dell,
Fare you well! Fare you well!

Home is behind, the world ahead,
And there are many paths to tread
Through shadows to the edge of night,
Until the stars are all alight.
Then world behind and home ahead,
We’ll wander back to home and bed.
Mist and twilight, cloud and shade,
Away shall fade! Away shall fade!
Fire and lamp, and meat and bread,
And then to bed! And then to bed!

I know about where the bassetts are, they're on the other side of the road and not too far down the road toward town. I've heard them sometimes... No mistaking the call of a bunch of hounds :~)

Whew!

All windows in the front are done and I got one coat on the two in the back. If I'm not too terribly lazy I'll put a second coat on after the race. They look all nice and bright....hope the neighbors aren't expecting me to do the siding right now. I'll get that done after the car is paid off next year.

Got the bulbs all planted, we'll see how we did in the spring. Having Ginger-beer, I think the front porch swing is calling, and a good book is already there.

Great work OT, we think that qualifies as the major improvement this year. Sounds like you have a good plan. Sun room last year, windows this year, one project at a time.

Living room windows:

Computer room windows:

Spare "bedroom" windows:

All three:

I'll have to paint the garage door next. I want to get someone to replace the front and storm doors this fall...neither one closes right.

It's pretty drippy here. My ambition has kinda fizzled for the moment, anyway.

Maybe I'll just finish off 24, season 3 instead...

Is it a sign that I'm now a Northwesterner when I realize I have to specify at *least* a double shot if I get coffee when I'm out and about or it doesn't taste like coffee to me? I keep forgetting to ask for the extra shot(s) and then am surprised at what I get. Milk shakes.

You're getting there! I don't think it tastes right if there's less than three shots in a tall. :~)

Looks good :~) That's tedious painting, lots of edges and crannies.

Well, I guess the "sooner or later" is here, as far as the troop support project goes.

After looking over my finances, I figure it's time for me to quit when my debt equals two years of my pre-tax income, and I have no guarantee of any job after December. I had hoped to take a loan against my 401k to cover costs, if needed, but I don't have enough.

ecurbh, we might as well put a "going out of business" sign on the site right now. I'll send out the rest of the stuff I have on hand, including the few last items coming in. There will be hundreds of troops that won't get a thing. Some have been waiting a year with the backlog we have. I have email addresses on all of them, and will make it clear it was my fault, and not that of the organization, which still has a heart of gold.

I just cannot express the remorse at leaving these requests unfilled.

My deepest regrets go out to the troops, and you people here. But I'm afraid it's time for me to concern myself with my financial survival.

Winmag, please don't consider needing to stop your fault, or anyone's fault. They'll understand. You've put yourself on the line again and again for this project, even over our fears for your financial welfare!

We're waiting on a check, then we'll be able to send some bucks your way.

Everyone, please help winmag out as much as you can.

Follow up, as I've walked around thinking about it. You may credit us all you want with having a heart of gold, but that's only your humility showing.

Every knife, gadget and tool we've ever sent was sent because you made it happen. It wasn't us, and our occasional donations that sent 1654 knives, and hundreds of other gadgets to the troops, it was you who did that, sometimes with a little bit of help from us.

It was good work, your good work. We'll continue to help, you take care of yourself!

Very sharp looking, well done. Hope the race was a good one.

Finished up composting the second bed, and putting chips on both. We're out of compost, sniff, it was just too droughty this year to get the supply we were hoping for. Hoping the plants understand.

You did more than anyone thought possible and there's sixteen hundred plus service men and women that have received something from you primarily with a little help here and there from us and others. OB & LSA

Thanks for all the kind words. I'm just busy reorganizing my efforts.

Once I ship everything out (not a trivial task, I have a large backlog, but also a large inventory), I'd like to steer the troop support work towards evaluating new gear, like we've been doing for flashlights, carabiners, etc. I'll give away my evaluation copy (unless it's so neat, I want to keep it), but at least we can give the Hobbit Hole seal of approval onto stuff that the troops either never heard of, or are too busy to obtain. Visit The Hobbit Hole before you deploy.

I'm also doing some work with Operation Helmet, installing upgrade kits with an eye for how easy and practical the upgrade kits are. There are probably millions of PASGT helmets out there, and I hope the Guard and Reserve get theirs upgraded before being sent overseas. I'd rather not see a repeat of the body armor debacle (thank you, Bill Clinton, the bad gift that keeps on giving).

I've already upgraded two helmets with kits from two different manufacturers, and have some strong opinions on both, which I'm writing for Doc Bob. Maybe we could post them on the "new" HH site, as part of our "new look".

On a more series note, if anybody knows of anyone in the military who wears a kevlar helmet, please have them check and see if they have the upgrade pads installed, or if they're getting them soon. These pads are real life savers, as well as making the helmet much more comfortable to wear for longer periods. The Army and Marines are committed to the upgrades, while the Navy and Air Force are still in a fog.

Ninjas? Well ... the word ninja means stealth fighter. I might have a place for such in Gift.

Okay ... the list stands at:

My deepest regrets go out to the troops, and you people here.

winmag, if there's any person on the face of the earth that should have absolutely no regrets about this project it's you.

You have done an incredible work on behalf of our troops. What I've done pales in comparison to the hours and dollars you've put into this.

Sure, it's difficult to say it's time to let it go. We all understand that. But never underestimate the work that you've done. Every package shipped, every knife you've sharpened has made a major difference.

If life were fair, we'd have all the money of George Soros, and Barbra and Sean Penn and all the other anti-American leftist morons (oops forgot Michael Moron), and they'd be scrubbing bathrooms at Hugo's local Citgo.

But, alas, that's not the case.

Still, I believe you've earned a special place in heaven for the encouragement and practical support you've given our troops. (Just don't move in too soon!).

God bless you winmag. I hope and pray that somehow God will meet and supply your every need and bless you with abundance.

Thank you on behalf of all of us.
