OSU's star QB last night was busted in late 2004 for taking money from a booster. OSU suspended him for a meaningless bowl game and then a warm up game the next season, reinstating him for the big game against Texas. Pretty shameful when a program has less integrity than sordid Oklahoma's!
And anyone other than a pissed off Texas fan who actually KNOWS the facts of each situation knows that what Bomar did was WELL IN EXCESS of what Troy Smith did. The NCAA blessed the self-imposed sanction and if Oklahoma had any control, they would've cut ties with that dealership when Adrian Peterson kept that car in a "test drive" for 4 months. Meanwhile, Ohio State completely cut ties with that booster, going as far to ban him from any official Ohio State function.

$500 is simply what he admitted to. Face facts, OSU has had an amazing number of 'incidents' in the last decade, and has taken a "Just win, baby" attitude. Not the only school to do so, but their reputation as an ethically-challenged program is well-earned.
I don't care how many yards and wins Troy Smith piles up, no player caught taking money from a booster should be considered for the Heisman.

The NCAA blessed the self-imposed sanction I'm not saying that I disagree with your overall post, but the NCAA has shown extreme leniency toward Big-10 schools and ND in the past.
What would get an SEC, ACC or Big-12 team (except Tennessee) 4 years of probation usually results in a "job well done - nothing to see here" from the NCAA when it happens to Big-10 team.
