The rule was interpreted correctly. Saban has the latitude to make his flag-throw known, even if it means taking the field.

Not so much the flag issue, but the fact that a referee running down the sideline directly behind the runner didn't see his entire calf go out of bounds. He looked to the ref on the goalline to determine if the ball crossed the goalline (since that ref was looking down the goal line) but he was the one looking down the out of bounds line. So 2 screwups by 2 refs, before we even get to the flag issue. And given how close the play was on the goal line, one would think that the refs might be anticipating a potential challenge.
