College Football - Live Thread - Week Two
ESPN.com Scoreboard ^ | From September 7th to September 9th

Week Two – College Football

Week One finally brought some much needed intensity to the summertime months for most of us. It was a relief for some (Ohio State, Notre Dame) and a crushing time for others (Colorado and Cal especially). Now that we’ve seen most every team in action, now we have something to go on other than perceptions when making picks.

As always, all rankings are from the ESPN.com Scoreboard page. I will also list any games of interest (FReepmail me if you want your team included and I will include them from here on out) and any other games listed in my Yahoo league.

GAME of the WEEK

Saturday, September 9th, 2006

(1) Ohio State at (2) Texas (-2.5)

Ohio State’s offense is fine. Their defense remains a question mark. Texas looked ok on offense and their defense is seemingly solid. Might we have another #1 after this week? Yes, probably. While there was quite a bit of holding in the Northern Illinois game, there was more of an issue of the Ohio State defenders getting off of blocks and making tackles. Now sure Garrett Wolfe would PROBABLY start on a team like Texas (he’s that good), NIU doesn’t have the offensive line that Texas does. Going into a hostile environment with a young and unproven defense isn’t quite as bit a hinderance as going in with a young and unproven offense, but Texas as a relatively experienced offense, just a redshirt freshman QB. Assuming he makes no mistakes, which is a hard thing to do in a game like this, Texas will win outright. Ohio State’s offense won’t make very many mistakes either, but their defense is the major question mark of this game.

Ohio State 25 – Texas 22

Thursday September 7th, 2006 (ESPN Thursday Night Game)

Oregon State at Boise State (-8)

This game should be a shootout. Neither team is especially known for defense. And we get to see that horrible blue turf they have in Boise very early this year.

Thank GOD Corso picked Texas. It's reassuring :)

I wonder if any Alabama fans will show up to see if Mike Price gets beat by the Blazers.

Alabama fans have no problem with Mike Price and wish him well - just wrong place and the wrong time. Now, UAB is a different story...

I see South Carolina as having the advantage in this game. As was noted, the UGA QB situation is very weak at this point - a couple of costly interceptions would not surprise me at all. USC will load up in the box and dare UGA to throw.

USC also always plays UGA very tough, even when the talent difference is severe. Spurrier also has a hard on for UGA as they had UF's number during the Dooley years.

This is a huge game because if Spurrier wants to be competitive then he will have to able to come in and cherry pick the state of Georgia in recruiting.

If this game were in week 8 then UGA would walk all over USC, but it's week 2 and USC has a serious advantage.

Come on, you know Herbie wanted to make the Homer pick for his Buckeyes. It's going to be fun hearing him have to praise Texas after the game when we are all singing the Eyes of Texas. He'll have raise his voice to drown that out!

Go Horns! Hook'em and Cook'em!

Actually I think he was going to pick Texas.

On his show in Columbus he was pretty much singing to the tune of that it will be a very hard game for the Buckeyes to win and that unless the OSU defense plays much better, Texas has every advantage except an experienced QB.

Having watched and listened to him for years, his tone and comments seemed to indicate to me that he would have picked Texas.

Texas has every advantage except an experienced QB.

That is the big equalizer though. Texas would be in much better shape if this game were later in the season.

In this game the UT defense is the key to the game - if it can keep the OSU to 3 and outs and cover up for any early game jitters by the UT offense then UT should be ok.

In the exact same way, the UGA defense is the key to the UGA-USC game.

It would certainly help both UT and UGA if their QBs were able to connect on a couple of early passes to take some men out of the box.

I believe that it both games, the game may swing on a couple of costly pics by inexperienced QBs.

There's where I think both will change, although I'm not 100% convinced that UGA will lose the game even with a couple picks...

Looks like Nebraska, to no ones surprise, is laying a shellacking down on Nicholls State, 2nd Quarter and we have alreader rotated 2nd and 3rd stringers in.

I agree, but I think Callahan wanted to just fill a blank spot on the schedule, otherwise we could have just taken a bye like USC did. Which is better a bye or a patsy?

meh, true. However Coz and Callahan have both essentially said they are treating these teams as warmups for USC, take that for what its worth though.

Which is better a bye or a patsy?

Early in the year a patsy, later in the year a bye. A team with national championship hopes should never schedule a big game within the first two weeks, though the losing early is the best time to lose as it gives you time to climb back up.

The "Luckeyes" are getting another big break. Overcast skies in Austin today. High temperatures continue to be forecast downward. Kickoff will be mid to low 80s.
