Dog attacks Yuba City girl (Pit Bull Mix)
Appeal Democrat ^ | September 06, 2006 | John Dickey

Robert Bijold has heard plenty of news stories about pit bull attacks.

But this weekend, Bijold suddenly found himself fighting a 60-pound pit bull-boxer mix that had his 3-year-old daughter, Jessie, in its jaws.

“It was the most horrifying thing a parent can go through,” said Bijold.

The Bijolds were at a family get-together Saturday evening on Park Avenue in Yuba City when the dog, which belongs to a relative, attacked Jessie in the backyard. Other children were playing with it only minutes before.

Bijold was horrified when he saw the dog grab Jessie's head and shake the little girl.

“All I saw was her feet in the air,” said Bijold.

Bijold ran as fast as he could and grabbed the dog. His father-in-law Ralph Mueller shielded the little girl from the dog, while Margaret Mueller, his mother-in-law, whisked the child inside the house. Jessie's uncle, Sam Miller, helped subdue the dog.

Bijold said the dog did not bite anyone else. But to the family's horror, it kept trying to get at Jessie, ignoring the other people. He had no idea what provoked the dog.

"The Pit Bull breeders and Pit Bull owners are at fault because some poor kid got mauled by a pit bull MIX"

Pit Bull breeders bread Pit Bulls to be aggressive and extremely tough and stubborn. They were bread to clamp down on a bulls nose and not let go for anything. Many Pit Bulls ended up with broken backs, hips, legs as the Bull would thrash it practically to death yet the Pit Bulls would not let go.

Obviously this sort of animal was never bread to be a pet. People like you that can train a Pit Bull to be a loving pet are in the minority, and even your pet has the tools to subdue a raging bull that Pit Bull breeders bread into him. They were bread to be dangerous and they are. Pit Bull breeders are not responsible for maulings because they never intended Pit Bulls to be pets, but they are responsible for breading the characteristics of a mauler into the breed.

Any owner, including owners who carefully train their Pit Bulls, are playing Russian roulette with the people that come into contact with their dog. You always hear, "but my dog never attacked anyone before" after a mauling.

With people who own breeds that were not bread to fight, I am willing to give them the benefit of the doubt. Any dog can bite suddenly and without warning under the right circumstances.

With people who own dogs that were bread to fight, I give no such benefit. They know going in what their dogs were bread to do.

What? It was the German Shepherd who started the altercation. There are pit bulls there, and no one runs away in fear. However, a group of @$$holes came in with their mean pits, and everyone banded together and made them leave.

There you go! Just making the point that Pit Bulls can no more control their primal urges than any other animal, and Pits have a more powerful force to contend with than the average doggie.

My pitbull has come to the defense of other dogs at the park too. There was a big stupid Great Dane trying to mess with a really old pointer. Roxy went right up to the 130 pound dog & checked him....then just gave him the stink eye. That was enough. The pointers owner was grateful as the Dane owner had no control over her dog.

They were bred for bull baiting, not cattle herding. Cattlemen won't use a dog that might actually maim or kill their cattle. Try a new rationalization.

Do you really believe that your dog came "to the defense" of the other dog? Your dog saw another dog at the park displaying dominance and therefore, "checked" him to establish his dominance. It had nothing to do with coming to the other dog's defense. Pit bulls will check any dogs in the park who do not appear submissive in order to establish dominance. I've seen it over and over again. Pit bulls were not bred to be friendly with other animals, including other dogs.

Wow, I better tell my pitbull that she is not friendly then....which will come as quite a shock to the other dog she lives with & her dozens of doggie friends at the park. Thanks for your insight into my dogs intentions & behavior. You really are super smaaht.

Also, FYI...my prior dog (a Chow Shepard mix) did the same thing for a pitbull he liked. They were friends & the pitbull was about to get attacked by a large boxer and another huge dog whose owners so kindly decided to sic their dogs on him at the park (the pitbull was very shy & sweet). The guys were big & mean & looking for a fight.

My dog put himself between the 2 big dogs & his little friend. Bear was not dominant, never been in a fight & did not care for many other dogs... but that pit he liked.

He could not fight a lick either...luckily a few of the dog owners stepped up to kick the a-holes & their dogs out before Bear got torn up. He wasn't smart, but he protected me & his friends. Think what you want, I know my dogs.

RIP Bear

"Pit bulls will check any dogs in the park who do not appear submissive in order to establish dominance. "

How did I miss this gem? That is so laughable. I am going to print it out & bring it to the park for the other dog owners to laugh at....you are funny.....in a simple sort of way.

Naturally all pitbulls are bad mentality will be out in force. However, children had been playing with this dog. I have seen children do the most hideous and cruel things to dogs. Naturally the dog will eventually bite back. The child was three years of age. How about putting some blame on the people who allow dogs and children mix. When it comes to judging what dogs are all about, I'll listen to the vets that handle and treat them, not the dog haters.

If alone on a dark street at night, I'd much prefer to be confronted by a pitbull than many of the two-legged, creepy things that lurk in the dark.

Not all pit bulls -- just a large percentage of them. Some owners are responsible, many others are not -- especially, when it comes to pit bull breeding and training. Pit bull-type dogs and rottweilers account for 67% of all dog fatalities. That being said, ANY dog can become aggressive under certain circumstances. I love dogs, own a couple now and have owned many over the years.

Hey, give it up. You have lots of folks here that the only acceptable solution is for all Pits to die.

I used to get really riled up over these posts, as a previous owner of two of the best dogs to ever walk this earth.

Come to think of it, the more you see / read of these anti-pit nazi's posts, the more parallels one can draw with the current political climate.

The experience you, I and many others have had with this breed matters not to the breed haters.

The only thing they know is that a Pit is bad and needs to die.

And most of 'em have no clue about the dog. Never owned one. Never been near one.

Don't need to - "we hate 'em"

Have you seen this logic emotion at work before?

Just let 'em be.

Why did Hellen Keller have to have such a dog? Or Teddy Roosevelt? Or Michael J. Fox? Or Fred Astaire? Woodrow Wilson? Or, why in the world did that ole thug wannabe General George Patton own one of these "monsters"?

Indeed. Funny, no threads have been made about the poor guy that was mauled to death by a boxer a few days ago. I guess his death wasn't as bad as this little girl's attack. Hm, come to think of it, the three children killed by husky type dogs, the woman killed by the old english sheepdog, the woman killed by the great pyrenees and lab mix, the boy killed by the english mastiff, the two people killed by great danes, or the toddler killed by a lab mix didn't garner any media attention this year. They just didn't have that, I don't know, pizazz.

Here are the "Piticides" for 2006. As you can see, a single breed(Pit Bulls) has killed more than all the other breeds combined in the US. But there is a massive media conspiracy!!
