Dog attacks Yuba City girl (Pit Bull Mix)
Appeal Democrat ^ | September 06, 2006 | John Dickey

Robert Bijold has heard plenty of news stories about pit bull attacks.

But this weekend, Bijold suddenly found himself fighting a 60-pound pit bull-boxer mix that had his 3-year-old daughter, Jessie, in its jaws.

“It was the most horrifying thing a parent can go through,” said Bijold.

The Bijolds were at a family get-together Saturday evening on Park Avenue in Yuba City when the dog, which belongs to a relative, attacked Jessie in the backyard. Other children were playing with it only minutes before.

Bijold was horrified when he saw the dog grab Jessie's head and shake the little girl.

“All I saw was her feet in the air,” said Bijold.

Bijold ran as fast as he could and grabbed the dog. His father-in-law Ralph Mueller shielded the little girl from the dog, while Margaret Mueller, his mother-in-law, whisked the child inside the house. Jessie's uncle, Sam Miller, helped subdue the dog.

Bijold said the dog did not bite anyone else. But to the family's horror, it kept trying to get at Jessie, ignoring the other people. He had no idea what provoked the dog.

Amen. Pit Bulls are a breed. Dogs that are bred for specific purpose retain that breeding despite training. No matter how "well" they are trained, these dogs still retain the breeding.

Pit Bull shouldn't be handled. Period.

"State law allows three attacks before a dog is euthanized.

So, a dog could kill three times before being given the death sentence. Not the same for humans. So who has more rights, a dog or a human?

Yeah, it's the little girl's fault she got mauled.

It may have been...it is certainly NOT the fault of ALL pitbull breeds that she got mauled!

IT is not the breed it is the way it is handled and trained. I have had several Pit Bull mixes and NOT ONE was aggressive because I TRAINED them correctly. Currently I have a Pit Bull/ Staffordshire Terrier mix. It is a wonderful and loving animal and would be mortified if its teeth touched your skin. These dogs don't attack if trained correctly or unless they are provoked.

Sorry, it is the breed -- or rather, the result of poor breeding. Any geneticist will tell you so. There was a selective breeding process that took place to make the dogs of today. These dogs have an extremely high prey drive and sometimes it is misdirected towards small children that they perceive as prey.

Some owners, like yourself, are much more responsible than others when it comes to breeding and training. Unfortunately, this breed got into the hands of the wrong people and unless you research the lineage very carefully, these dogs are more likely to be aggressive.

Good heavens. Poor thing. That looks like some very nasty injuries. Glad she's alive though.

I had a run in with one, one time.

So did my Airedale. She had the pitbull on it's back in under 10 seconds. Go Airedales.

"So, a dog could kill three times before being given the death sentence."

Not quite. A dog that kills someone is usually put down pronto.

The three attack rule means that the dog only needs to attack someone. The attack need not culminate in a bite to be considered an "attack".

I had to look that one up (Airedale). That's a big terrier. I had no idea they got that big.

Why do you feel the need to own a dog whose bite can crush and break bones? Are less powerful dogs simply not macho enough for you?

It's true Pit Bulls can be trained not to kill innocent people, but so can other dogs. Are other dogs bites not powerful enough for you? Why is it necessary for you to own a dog that can kill with a single bite?

Airedales - King of Terriers.

Both mine are incredibly sweet - provided you aren't a cat, a squirrel or another disrespectful dog.

No, It's the fault of ALL Pit Bull breeders, and ALL Pit Bull owners she got mauled. Dogs only do what they are bread and trained to do.

Now this is just as nonsensical as the other end of the extreme.

Any who asks: "why do you need....."fill in the blank..,
is a socialist nanny stater who thinks their entitled to decide other's lives for them.

Pit bulls have a place, they are working dogs and when used as intended, in the cattle pens and horse stalls, etc, they are certainly justified.

People like you, on the other hand, need to be regulated.

They were originally developed for blood sports. Not ranching.

Some may argue that. I happen to think that they were developed in England for cattle control. The origins of the breed and all that.

Which came first? Its a chicken or egg argument, with the truth probably somewhere in the middle.

The Pit Bull has inherited the genes of the now extinct White Terrier from England. The White Terrier was so aggressive in 1800's England, it was deemed a social menace by proclamation and was made extinct. The modern Pit Bull still has that genetic tendency lurking below the surface. So, with cool and unsympathetic instincts, they regard us with envious eyes, and slowly and surely draw their plans against us.
