LANESVILLE, Ind. -- A 23-year-old man who was caring for a 14-foot snake in southern Indiana was found dead Monday night.
Officials did not know how the man died and would not speculate.
The body of the man, identified as Patrick Von Allmen, was to go to the Kentucky Medical Examiner's Office in Louisville for an autopsy Tuesday.
Mark Farmer, an Indiana Department of Natural Resources spokesman, said Von Allmen was found in a shed in Lanesville and that the 14-foot reticulated python was found loose in the shed.
The snake was captured and returned to the man's family.
Indiana law doesn't restrict ownership of pythons because they are non-venemous. They kill their prey by squeezing.

Officials did not know how the man died... Well... here's a significant clue:
Von Allmen was found in a shed... and... the 14-foot reticulated python was found loose in the shed.

Just saw a thing on cable the other day about reticulated pythons. It showed the host being squeezed by one and he just barely was able to extricate himself (or so it appeared...I suppose the scene could have been staged).
That snake didn't lokk particularly friendly.

LANESVILLE, Ind. -- Authorities said Tuesday that a 23-year-old southern Indiana man was crushed to death by a 14-foot python.
Indiana conservation officers said an autopsy performed Tuesday morning on Patrick Von Allmen determined that his death was caused by asphyxiation around the neck and chest.
Von Allmen was found dead in a shed near his home in Lanesville, about 15 miles west of Louisville, Ky.
A 14-foot reticulated python was loose in the shed.
Conservation Officer Mark Farmer said the family had obtained the snake five months ago as a pet. They said Von Allmen had 10 to 12 years experience handling reptiles.
Before entering the shed, he told family members he was going to treat the snake for a medical condition.
The snake was returned to the family. Indiana law doesn't restrict ownership of pythons.

I can't for the life of me figure out why people call these things "pets". They aren't pets, pets can show affection back at you. Those things just see a 2 legged pig that might be just too big to swallow when you walk in the room.

I never thought about it before, but now that you mention it, I'll bet there are a lot of pythons named Monty.
