(AP) SAN DIEGO -- Chargers linebacker Steve Foley was shot by an off-duty policeman in front of his suburban home Sunday. Coach Marty Schottenheimer said the wounds were not life-threatening.
"All we're worried about is that he's OK," Schottenheimer told The Associated Press in a telephone interview.
The early morning shooting occurred after the officer reported seeing a suspected drunken driver weaving in and out of traffic on an area highway and attempting to pull him over, said sheriff's Lt. Dennis Brugos.
"My understanding is he was shot three times in front of his house by an off-duty officer and that he's in surgery," Foley's agent, David Levine, told The Associated Press.
Paramedics were called to the suburban San Diego neighborhood at 3:47 a.m. and transferred a trauma victim to Sharp Memorial Hospital, according to a fire department dispatcher.
Hospital spokeswoman Kathy Gambito said she did not have any information on a patient named Steve Foley.
"We have confirmed that linebacker Steve Foley was shot early this morning," team spokesman Bill Johnston said in a statement. "We'll try to provide more information as it becomes available. Right now all of our thoughts are with Steve."
Foley has played eight seasons in the NFL, for Cincinnati, Houston and San Diego.
The shooting came eight days before the Chargers were scheduled to open the season at Oakland, and was the second time in four months that Foley has been involved in an incident with police.
Foley was arrested April 21 on charges of resisting arrest after police said he scuffled with officers. Foley also was booked on charges of battery on a police officer and public drunkenness.
The district attorney's office said recently it was not pursuing charges against Foley in that incident.

Man, they have some weak defensive players now. In the old days, if you'd shot Alex Karras, you'd just have made him mad.
(I hope it's obvious that I'm kidding. Hope Foley comes out okay.)
2nd time he's gone after a police officer in very, very recent history.. sounds like his girlfriend tried to run the officer down as well.
Football trumps civil decency? Will see once again on this one......
Wonder why he was shot
Unless he physically attacked the cop
What chu be talken about Willis?????
After stopping at a red light, the off-duty officer pulled beside Foley, identified himself as a police officer, and ordered him to pull over, but Foley drove away, Brugos said. Foley stopped again, and got out of his car, approaching the officer, according to police. The officer again identified himself, pulled out a gun, and ordered the suspect several times to stop, Brugos said.
However he continued to walk toward the officer, making the statement, 'That's a bb gun', Brugos said.
Foley then got back into his car and the off-duty officer followed him to a cul-de-sac in Poway, where Foley lives.
Foley got out of the car and started walking toward the officer, while his female passenger drove the car alongside him, Brugos said. The officer identified himself again and then fired a warning shot into the bushes, Brugos said. Brugos said the female then revved the engine and drove directly at the officer, by then out of his car; the officer fired two shots at Foley's vehicle. The officer was not hit by the car.
Foley reached into his pants with his right hand as he approached the officer and the officer fired at the suspect. Foley acknowledged he'd been shot, Brugos said, but continued to move toward the officer, who fired again. Foley then fell to the ground.
Foley was taken to a hospital and the female passenger was taken to the Poway sheriff's station for questioning.
Yup cop chased a DUI guy(3am+-) and perps a pro F ball player(cant touch this) and the "Law Enforcement Officer aka LEO" just decided to shoot him....
Sounds like an upstanding role model for young people.
It looks like the police need bigger guns.
Under arrest!
Should have called the "Jim Rome celebrity Drunk Bus".
1-800 BLAHhhh.
That's a scary looking guy. Shooting him might not have been an option for the officer.
Sounds about right to me....think there was any "tootskies" involved..?Hoomie do
No, it can't be true. Not a upstanding NFL/NBA player in trouble with the law again. What is it with these cops profiling these players. They are picked on because of their race!
Handguns don't always work against a determined foe.
