An explosion has killed one child and injured six others in the Oleander neighborhood, according to Detective Greg Terry with the Bakersfield Police Department.Dozens of emergency personnel descended on the 1900 block of Maple Avenue around 5 p.m. and two children have been removed from a home on stretchers.Neighbors said children found shotgun shells and placed them in a barbecue pit. They exploded and injured the children.

I'd go with the simple solution. Kids, shotgun shells, BBQ, and one kid's brilliant suggestion.
Youthful stupidity. A friend's dad had a reloading press when I was a kid. On more than one occasion we poured a whole can of gunpowder and several boxes of primers into a pile in the alley in back of his house and flicked matches at it till it ignited. Fortunately no one got injured, but it easily could have gone very, very badly.
It's a wonder we out lived our youth.
