Woods Calls for Drug Testing
LA Times ^ | 08/26/06 | Thomas Bonk

There is no drug-testing policy on the PGA Tour, and when Tiger Woods called for one this week at the Bridgestone Invitational, no one should have been surprised, according to Woods' agent, Mark Steinberg of IMG.

"There's a lot out there right now, with BALCO, the cycling and the sprinters, so what he's saying is, 'Start with golf, start with me. I'm clean and I think the sport's clean,' " Steinberg said Friday.

" 'If people are speculating about golf, let's get it over now.' "

I agree...at this point its not that bad, but it will be. The guys who do not use enhancements are at such a disadvantage now.
As Canseco said, "roids make good athletes outstanding, and outstanding ones unbeatable".

Woods is unbeatable now.

ANother opinion

This Week at WorldGolf.com: Feb. 22, 2005

Jason Giambi took his first cuts at spring training today as a walking petrie dish, "the most obvious juicer in the game," according to Jose Canseco, a self-admitted steroid user according to leaked grand jury testimony. Every move Giambi makes will be analyzed, reanalyzed and then dissected some more in the upcoming months.

This is baseball's new reality, the harsh payback for years of turning an eye so blind that Stevie Wonder would not accept its version of vision.

Well, you know what major sport doesn't have a steroid policy now, let along a testing program? Golf. Go ahead and scoff, say how steroids would never infiltrate the game, how the chemists' magic pills, creams and syringes could never bring a competitor closer to a green jacket. This seems to be the view of PGA Tour commissioner Tim Finchem, who revealed in recent stories that even if golf ever suspected it had a steroid problem it would rely on an honor system like with all the other rules in the storied sport. This is surely the opinion of Retief Goosen who told The Associated Press, "There is a lot of power involved in golf, but more so feel and touch. I don't know if somebody took steroids how that would affect the game."

Don't listen now, but Finchem and Goosen sound a lot like Bud Selig and Mark McGwire did 10 years ago.

This isn't to suggest that golf will ever be hit by the kind of rampant steroid use that ran through the major leagues. It does show how deep and easy denial runs though. The biggest benefit of the juice is the ability to recover from workouts much quicker, to build mass and fast-twitch muscles much faster. Remember, how major leaguers used to scoff at steroid suggestions, by saying they couldn't help you hit a baseball?

To argue that steroids could have no benefit to the golfer is laughable. This is becoming more and more a game of athletes and as Canseco said on "60 Minutes," "Steroids make a good athlete great and a great athlete superhuman."

Something to think about before laughing off the idea of steroids in golf.

I wasn't sure what roids were, My first thought was use Preparation H, then I saw your screen name. Are beta blockers a drug, I thought they were in some foods naturally?

I don't think there is a sport with more rules than golf, I playing baseball once and decided it would be nice if I had a caddy to carry my bat around for me.

My understanding of beta blocker are that they are similar to anxiety control drugs. They help you focus on the greens and calm you down when the pressure is on. Golfers rely on repetition. A golfer who regularly hits a 8 iron 150 yds, may hit it differently when he is excited or under stress...the drugs keep him on an even keel.

Rumor is from PGA pros that several tournys have been won with them.

So what? You've got 'roids on your brain, and a great deal of jealousy for people who work hard and succeed.

And you are a gullible moron; I wish I had a sales business in your neighborhood.

I accuse Woods of getting a little help and I despise all people who work hard and suceed???He is one person....sorry I drew a cartoon of your Allah.

when his maximum drive his 265 yds? When he is told he can't make it on tour with that length,

That's crazy. One makes it on the tour because they win or place high in the tour qualifying tournaments it has nothing to do with how far they drive. Someone who hits a consistent 265 yd drive into the fairway is more than competitive to play even the longest par 4s and score on those holes.

There is nobody in the PGA telling someone " oh you shot 15 under par in the school qualifying tournament but since your drive is only 250 yards your not getting your tour badge."

"A once wory 20 year old looks like an outside linebacker now. He has the strength to hit a 9 iron out of the rough from 190 and stop it on a dime....over a tree."

Well, my once wiry 20 year old spouse weighed approximately 145 at 6 feet while he was on the professional surfing circuit. He's now 42 and a healthy 185. Woods is now 30. Men change over time. I understand he has quite an exercise regime. He could easily enhance his 'golfing' muscles through proper weight training.

LOL

Trying to compare someone like Giambi to Tiger Woods is pretty weak even for someone like you.

Archie Bunker on Cocaine is a perfect nickname for you.

Glad you could show up this time. You were NOTICABLY absent last week when Tiger lapped the field, and your boy Vijay, at the PGA.

Its hard to compete when stronger men are outdriving you by 100yds like Fred Funk has to experience. You can't check a ball up on the green with a 4 iron as the big hitters can do with a wedge. This is what's happening today and the little guy can't compete.

Funk is hitting 5 irons into the greens that Tiger is pitching into.

That's where the temptation begins.

Mike....I guess Saturday cartoons are over.

VJ has been noticeably absent of late. Another contender paired with Woods (Luke Donald) choked last Sunday. No one can give us a competitive Sunday & its the Tiger show again as it will be this weekend after Love falls apart.

Yep and it's because he's easily the best player in the world AND he's clean. That's the best part. Haters like you have nothing to go back on except that you SAY he's doing drugs, when every piece of evidence says he isn't....

Must SUCK to be you.

The last description of Woods was that he was the "best conditioned athlete on the planet" The PGA will never allow testing of its players as they are afraid of who may test positive.

People do change over time; especially those 240lb college defensive ends that are drafted into the NFL and show up 290lbs at NFL training camp. The defense is"must've worked out hard over the summer"...like the college football player does not workout.

Steroids are rampant....bottom line. Canseco cannot be argued with.

Nervous now that the PGA has received its first bit of heat? Why is that? IS it because Tiger played the deep rough at Medinah like the other pros played the fairways? How does he keep the clubface square through that stuff when no one else can?

I was defensive too as I grew up and learned that pro sports are not as pure as I thought as a child.....you'll get there.
