Utter Vanity Request - Help Me Name My New Puppy

Vanity of vanities . . .

I put a deposit down today on a female Black Labrador Retriever, born 8/16. She'll be ready to come home in October. So now I've got to figure out a name for this little bundle of joy.

She's coming from Wisconsin, from Candlewood Kennels which is arguably the best field trial kennel in the country. She's not a typical field trial dog, she has some "dual purpose" (i.e. show and hunt test) on her mom's side. Her mom is a fully trained hunting dog who has produced good field dogs.

The tradition is to somehow combine the names of the father and mother. Of course her prefix has to be Candlewood. The sire is FC/AFC The Man In Black ("Cash"), who is by 2xNAFC/2xCNAFC Ebonstar Lean Mac (a top producing sire - 117 field champions) out of Gator Point's Sweet Potato Pie, a CFTC/CAFTC Pachanga Magnum Force daughter out of a HRCH. The dam is Kerrybrook Candlewood Connor, who is by Ch. Franklin's Champagne out of Kerrybrook's March to the Sea JH. That side has notable FC/AFC Webshire's Honest Abe, another very good field trial sire, and Abercrombie & Fitch MH, who is a sire not only of field dogs but also numerous seeing eye dogs and search and rescue dogs. Two of his get were S&R dogs at the Twin Towers. So she should have plenty of brains, and plenty of "go". Because of the show background she should be a pretty girl as well.

The obvious way to go is a Johnny Cash song . . . friend of mine suggested "A Dog Named Sue" . . . we could easily tie in her mom's name with an "O'Connor" . . . but I'm kind of looking for something cute and a little unusual.

I figured I could get both out of the dog fanciers at FR . . . the floor is open for nominations.

We just named our 7-week old Schnauzer "Dougie." The Pomeranian is "Smokey" because he is black with kind of an ashiness throughout the black. Very pretty.

We've had "Morgan" and "Chami" (for Champagne) and "Sparky," a fiesty red/blonde Pom.

Call your dog something like "Buttons." Go for the old names. "Buster," etc.

Gus (good for boy or girl dog), I knew a woman named Gus - she was nice.

Woofie

I always fall back on "Woofie" when I can't think of a dog's name, even my own dog's names!

If your new pup was a male, I would have suggested " Dread Pirate Roberts" from The Princess Bride, who wore all black and was quite accomplished. But since she's not...

I guess if you want to get kind of macabre, "Dahlia" might be an artsy name, in the punk rock sense.

If you're a NASCAR fan, consider "Darlington". (Darlington Raceway is sometimes referred to as "the Lady in Black")

I think "Audrey" for Audrey Hepburn and her famous black Givenchy dress would be so chic!

Audrey was so elegant in black (and everything else). Instead of Audrey, what about "Holly Golightly" for the new puppy?

I just don't know much about lab pedigrees. But, I certainly expect to be pinged when photos are forthcoming. And I will let it percolate around my head, you never know what might pop up (especially now that I know Iran isn't going to nuke us!) :)

Meth. Meth Lab.

No, scratch that one.

I like your "A Dog Named Sue." Other Johnny Cash possibilities:

No, only kittens come housebroken.

But we've been there, done that. Labs housebreak very easily, they're naturally clean.

There will be LOTS of pictures.

The next decision is, do I fly up to bring her back, or do we ship her?

I helped to name a Black Lab for a friend, once. (We've had two ourselves, so far.)

He named her "Belle of River View" as we both liked Belle because our kids were into "Beauty & the Beast" at the time, and he lived in River View. Oh, so classy!

Maybe you can use that angle? Otherwise, go with "Skippy," LOL!

Our Basset Hound is AKC. His mom was "Sophie" and so Rufus' registered name is "Sophie's Choice Rufus."

Another thing to consider is that a dog responds better to a two-syllable name. "Rooo-Fus!" "Cin-Der!" "Mur-Phee!" has worked well for our dogs so far. Our "dustmop dog" was named "Sasha" which also worked. I miss that little f@rt!

Enjoy your dog. Labs just rock. I'll never be without at least one in my life if I can help it. :)

"Will the Puppy Be House-broken?" was a play on "Will the Circle Be Unbroken?"

Gotcha . . . little slow on the pickup. Trying to cook steaks, post, and watch a special on the TV on Fender guitars . . . and pat the dog.

Potlatch was the name of my little Peke-a-poo and Piper is my Yorkie. It can be hard to decide on a name!

I saw a cute dog recently named Tag.

Or, how about Uncle Fester for a funny name.
