That was my first thought as well.
I have found THIS website which was created and maintained by an old Israeli Rabbi interesting as it concerns ancient genealogy from a Jewish/biblical point of view. Not necessarily all factual, but interesting none the less.
A tidal wave shortly before 3000 B.C. desertified the north African plain where the ancestors of the Circaesir had once lived.I hadn't read that part, saw it in a reply. Wonder where that claim comes from? Everyone knows that Phaethon created the desert when he took the Sun out for a spin. ;')

This somewhat lengthy article suggests a cometary origin for the story, connected with the Pleiades and the Comet Encke, and a fairly well documented date of occurrance at or about 1200-1150 BC..
It is not unlikely that such a comet collision or near collision could have initiated a catastrophic event resulting in an oral tradition that resulted in part of the greek mythos..
At any rate it's a good read..
The mention of Cimmeria made me think of Conan the Barbarian, who was a Cimmerian...during the age before the rise of the sons of Arias....
