I read through other resumes posted at job4teacher.com and saw a common thread...that candidates skip from job to job after a year.

I also read a sample contract and learned that the employers commonly supply living quarters in addition to salary and reimburse the hired teacher for his travel expenses after 3 months on the job. The employed teacher is responsible for paying his phone bill and supplying his food. So, this is how Karr and others like him (?) travel from country to country.

Also in Europe the countries are close together and trains to easily accommodate this travel that are cheaper than flying. Europe is tiny compared to the U.S. where states are more spread out.

Very interesting......But how would he get the money to go from GA/Al to CO. How expensive would an airline ticket and car rental be in 1996?

Carolinamom has indeed hit the nail on the head. Fortunately, most of the English teachers in Thailand are no pedophiles but most are traveling and teaching to survive. Most are kids, just out of college, who have romantic visions of traveling the world and spreading knowledge where they go. Those I have run across in Chiang Mai seem to be having a good time. After a year or two, most go back home and settle down to the realities of life. A few get married and continue in the country of their choice. I know a Belgian who owns a restaurant and guesthouse and also teaches French at a private school and does quite well.

The bad part of it is, of course, that some are those whose trips begin as sex tourism and result in a marriage to a bar girl. Things tend to go down hill from their and many of these folk end up in jail for drug trafficking or, increasingly lately, pedophilia.
