Boulder columnist tells 9NEWS about conversations with Ramsey suspect (Karr)
KUSA Denver ^ | August 19, 2006

Posted on 08/19/2006 5:16:19 PM PDT by Shermy

BOULDER - As a running columnist for the Boulder Daily Camera, Mike Sandrock had little interest in the JonBenet Ramsey investigation until he saw a photo in his paper's newsroom.

The picture staring back at him, Sandrock remembered the summer of 2002 in Paris like it was last week.

Sandrock travels the world covering running events, but this trip was used for research on an Ernest Hemmingway book he's preparing.

Beneath his Paris loft, Sandrock looked for motivation in a bookstore named Shakespeare and Company, a hangout of Hemmingway's in the 1920's where his thoughts and career once started to blossom.

Sandrock met many tourists in the historic shop, and shared several conversations, including many talks with a John Mark Karr.

"He was just a regular guy, clean cut, very pleasant in fact," said Sandrock.

The topics quickly focused on JonBenet Ramsey and Boulder, Colorado after Sandrock's occupation came up.

"He said what do you do? I told him I'm a columnist with the Daily Camera in Boulder, and he got so excited," said Sandrock.

Maybe excited was an understatement, as every word thereafter, was about the town and the story.

"He knew everything about it, everything," said Sandrock.

Karr recited many facts about Boulder, from landmarks to the location of the Daily Camera.

"I got the impression he had been in Boulder, then I thought he just saw the documentaries," said Sandrock.

Documentaries produced by CU Professor Michael Tracy, whom Sandrock knew, and someone Karr wanted to know.

After talking with Karr on several occasions that summer, Sandrock was no longer interested in the subject, but later agreed to put Karr in touch with Professor Tracy through e-mail.

"I got the impression he wanted to talk more, but I stopped the conversations when he got into how the girl died, I just was not interested in that," said Sandrock.

Sandrock said Karr never discussed having visited Colorado, and never got the impression that Karr was a murderer, only extremely consumed with JonBenet Ramsey and her death.

"That's the thing, he wasn't that different, just obsessive, even in Boulder you meet a lot of people that are obsessive," said Sandrock.

Thank you so much. Yep, that's the post where I saw it. I wonder what else we thought we knew and didn't, or haven't even thought to wonder about because it's something not known or not covered in the public domain, that might be relevant. I thought it was potentially relevant to know why his mother died when he was 12, only to learn......that she......DIDN'T.

The standards for a civil case are a lot less stringent than for a criminal case.

What part of the outcomes of the criminal and civil cases against O.J. don't you remember?

The media will do and say what it pleases. Why would lacey care. The media conjecture has no bearing on the FACTS.

Well, there was an article in the more recent batch that said his children were born in CA and they found the records on all of them, even printing the name of one whose name was unusual.

Maybe so, but they're not in the main files online - and I really doubt they were born in CA, because it was the lady at the courthouse in Hamilton (AL) who said all of his children were delivered at home, including the twins who died.

Whether or not they registered the births is a different matter, but they were born in approx. 1991, 1992, and 1993, when John Mark and Lara lived in AL. They didn't move to CA until 2000. Hence, I believe the report to be incorrect.

Interesting that you took personal umbrage at my comment about people needing attention. Don't believe I mentioned any poster in particular. Sorry the shoe fit!

Read post 97 and get back to me with all your evidence that contradicts the evidence delineated in the article.

I agree. I am a mother to two boys 8 and 4. If I had found them like Jonbenet I would have grabbed them in my arms and done the exact same thing John Ramsey did!

One look at his pic made my skin crawl, and I didn't read much further than the 1st paragraph, either.

'Regular guy'? I hardly fricking think so, E. Evil oozes from every pixel I see of him. Imagine him times thousands or hundreds-of-thousands in Bangkok and its surrounds, I'd guess.

Tucker said Karr never said or did anything inappropriate to her. Looking back, however, she sees now that some of the things he did, like sit on the carpet with the girls in the class during break, may not have been a good idea on his part.

Oh, no! Lock him up and throw away the key!

Sorry, but sitting on the floor is no where near killing a little child. In another tv interview (CNN or FOX on the first day) with a young lady who was his neighbor discussed how she was surprised because she liked him and he'd buy cookies from her every year.

I wonder if any dead guys were missing a delorean back then.

I was thinking more along the lines of a sicko/pervert he got the goods on, such as I'll give you the Delorean and you keep your mouth shut about what you know.

It was her favorite Barbie nightgown. Priscilla White knew it, but evidently Patsy had forgotten

Pasty certainly had a very bad memory. Didn't remember her daughter's favorite gown and didn't remember the bear which JonBenet had played with enough to redress it and put one of her earrings on it. How many other things and events did Pasty forget?

If the DNA under her fingernails matches the DNA on her underwear, that should rule out the allergenic store clerk.

Here is an odd observation.

Let's assume that this isn't the guy, and he's just a loon who wishes he was. We know that he is obsessed with the case. He's spent four years conversing with Tracey. He's probably tracked down every little tidbit of info available. He's most likely read every book and watched every documentary on the subject. So, if he wants to take credit for this, why is he giving details that can be confirmed to be wrong by the information that's available to anyone?

If I found my child like that my first thought would not be, "I better not touch her or the police will think I did it."

Likewise, if I accidentally knocked my kid onto the bathtub and cracked open her skull, my first thought wouldn't be, "Gosh, what's the most bizarre way I can make this look like a kidnap/murder....hmmm?"
