Tour de France winner Floyd Landis' father-in-law committed suicide in his car outside the North Park restaurant he owned with his wife, authorities said Wednesday.

David Witt, 57, was found mortally wounded by a self-inflicted gunshot wound to the head in a 29th Street parking structure about 3 p.m. Tuesday, according to San Diego police and coroner's officials.

Medics took the La Mesa resident to Scripps Mercy Hospital, where he was pronounced dead shortly before 10 p.m., the county Medical Examiner's Office reported.

Authorities did not disclose if Witt left a suicide note.

He is survived by his wife, Rose, whose daughter is married to Landis.

Since winning France's famed cycling title last month, Landis, a Murrieta resident, has tested positive for testosterone, putting the achievement in jeopardy.

Very sad. I imagine since the controversy erupted that customers came in (even regulars) and heckled him. Just got to be too much for him, it sounds like. Plus, he might have thought his daughter married a huge fraud.

I won't speculate on his motive, but I agree that it is vary sad. Just another UN-needed burden placed on the family.

What ever is going on with Floyd, no family deserves this.

My thoughts are with the family.

Same here.
I am not even going to attempt to speculate on his reasons, until much more about him is forthcoming.
Might have nothing whatsoever to do with Floyd Landis.

Floyd is surrounded by dark clouds. I hope he has the humility to kneel down and pray to the Lord for guidance.

What the hell happened to this family to deserve this?

My tinfoil take:

Tour officials, fearing a devastating outing confession by Floyd Landis (which would uncover the fact that the entire tour is doped up), have sent Floyd a message to keep quiet...

No, I dont believe a word of it, but it might make a good episode of Criminal Intent or something..

MY sincere condolences to Floyd and Amber Landis, and to the entire Witt family. To have this piled on top of what Floyd is going through is going to test the strength and resolve of every member of that family. I will pray for all of them to make it through this.

Sadly, one of the first things that went through my mind ,after hearing that Witt introduced Landis to road racing and was responsible for much of Floyd's early career, was to wonder if Witt maybe helped Floyd "prepare" and felt responsible for what has happened. Pretty sad statement on how cynical we have become that the first thought is "I wonder how much he knew?"

Was Witt involved in the cycling business?
