One week vacation driving from San Francisco to Seattle Hoping FReepers can add suggestions and recommendations. Planning to travel the coastal highway but would like to know when to get off to see some great sites.
Stop by Longview and see the statue of the Squirrel, and the Nutty Narrows Bridge. It is a bridge built across a road for the squirrels, so they don't get squished.
Mt St. Helens on a clear day (Ya better hurry, cloudy season starts soon)
Mt Rainier
Dinner at Ivar's on the waterfront. Or better yet, Salty's on Alki. The best view of the city anywhere.
Ah, Sitting Duck by Bedard.
Not going to sleep on the beach. However, after Eureka we are winging it for a motel/hotel to go to. Just don't know the area at all and figure we could find something by 4:30 p.m. We didn't think that would be a problem do you? THANK YOU SO MUCH for your info. So appreciate it.
Crater Lake is a must see...
Make a pitstop east of the Mountains in Bend, and be sure to hit the Deshutes Brewpub..
Hit Oregon's Willamette Valley Wine country
Washington's Capitol, Olympia, one of the most beautiful in the country
And a wonderful, revitalized downtown Tacoma.
Cheers.
Hi. ok the squirrel bridge has to be a joke. About the dinner at Ivar's or Salty's on Alki is that in Seattle?
Don't listen to VOA, Seattle is more pleasant than Vancouver. Not as many drug adicts roaming around (not quite anyway) and I think Seattle is a prettier place.
Freepmail me if you want tips on what to do in Seattle.
VOA, your hurting our tourist industry here. LOL
Who wants to see Hillary's legs!
Oh, the Crater Lake picture just relieved my fears of flying from CT to Chicago to San Francisco. Apprehension has been the feeling around here since the latest terrorists threat. But I just feel renewed! Thank you so much.
The Oregon Coast is beautiful.
Very welcome. Have a great time!!
Have you been out this way before??
Drove the Coast highway from San Diego to Seattle 2-3 times in a Datsun 260Z. Great drive.
ONE WARNING--GET RESERVATIONS AHEAD OF TIME! Lodging tends to be booked up for 100's of miles.
Hearst Castle is a must see. Big Sur, of course. A number of the beach communities are beautiful etc. but many not all that greatly different from one another. Great vistas and picture post card scenes. If you have a film or high resolution digital--plan to take time to stop and use them.
I think Solvang is on that route though south of San Fran.
Monteray and the Acquarium is probably south of San Fran, as I recall--but might be worth the relatively short trip down to see it from San Fran.
Certainly the redwoods are wonderful and would probably be worth a night amidst them, if possible.
Of course, a great quake and tsunami could mess up all such plans so we'll pray any such would occur well after your trip, if at all! LOL.
God's best and safe traveling to you.
Please post pics and travelogue if you are able! And ping me to it. Was a favorite trip of mine.
Heh MF thanks for fullfilling by expectation! I am so excited about being a sitting duck on the American airline from CT to Chicago to San Francisco. You are great. Thanks.
The Denby stoneware pottery studio I think is still just north of the Golden Gate bridge. It's on the right side of the highway and was within 2-5 right turns north of the bridge--back in 1978-ish. Probably still is. Well worth seeing and their seconds are quite reasonable.
Take the ferry from Edmunds, WA, just north of Seattle and drive the 101 to Olympic National Park. Beautiful Rainforest and great seafood in Port Angeles, WA..
Nope. But it looks like a lovely area of the U.S.
It absolutely is. Let me know when you are planning a trip this way. Your eyes will get tired of the beauty. :o)
