Backup Sample on Landis Is Positive
San Francisco Chronicle ^ | 8-5-2006

Tour de France champion Floyd Landis' backup urine sample confirmed high levels of testosterone, cycling's governing body said Saturday, raising the prospect that he could lose his title.

Following the results of the "B" sample, Landis was expected to be fired by his Swiss team, Phonak, which had suspended him pending the results. He also faces a two-year ban from USA Cycling, which is responsible for sanctions against the American rider.

"The analysis of the sample B of Floyd Landis's urine has confirmed the result of an adverse analytical finding notified by the Anti-doping laboratory of Paris on 26th July, following the analysis of the sample A," the International Cycling Union said, referring to the Chatenay-Malabry lab outside Paris.

The confirmed test sets off what could now be months of appeals and arguments by Landis, who repeatedly has claimed his innocence and vowed to fight the allegations.

If held up, Landis would become the first winner of cycling's premier race to lose his Tour title over doping allegations.

Mennonite, actually, but in this situation that's probably a distinction without a difference...

What he could do is to immediately come clean and profess his complete remorse and agree to cooperate completely in rooting out this drug abuse. Confession is good for the soul. We are all sinners in the sight of God and the best way to fix this is to become truthful. It has a cleansing effect on anyone if they will do it.

He will be banned for two years but he could come back if he goes into a full court press and speak publically about it and the professional pressure to excel. People are very likely to respect a truth teller than one who is denying the undeniable. That's his only chance. Will he take it or try to tough it out. That would only prolong the pain. I hope he takes the high road and owns up to his guilt. We'll see.

Phonak has already fired him so it is up to him and God.

Thank you for saying this. As a believer in the Powers of Redemption I agree. It is also the right thing to do and would have a positive impact on those young people who think he's a hero and are tempted to find a chemical fix for their sports success.

I was just reading today's sports page about the case of Mark McGuire. He's evidently waiting for the statute of limitations to run out (five years). This a year after the Mitchell commission got his word that he would do all he could to stem the tide of steroid use in sports and after McGuire directly heard testimony of a Dad who lost his high-school son to suicide linked to steroid use. These sports "hero's" -- including those featured on Wheaties boxes --have a higher responsibility to "come clean." If they don't they bear the consequences of the harm they have done, the hopes they have dashed, the cynicism they have caused.

One question that needs to be resolved is whether there was any tampering with the samples after they were taken. There are several tests that could be made:

1. DNA testing to make sure that the samples are actually from Landis.
2. Comparison of the drug levels in the two samples. If the samples were individually doctored, it would be difficult to insure that the levels were almost the same. One would expect that the second sample would have a slightly lower level (IIRC, they were taken 20 minutes apart).
3. Analysis of the samples for byproducts of testosterone. If the testosterone was actually in Landis, it should have produced higher levels of such byproducts.

The french suspect? What's the motive? Destroy the Tour's TV ratings? Put a spaniard in 1st place?

No, simply for the pleasure to be hatred by more people in the USA. ;-)

Seeing as how you have appointed yourself judge, jury and executioner in this case, and are obviously an expert in the use of synthetic testosterone or doping since you are making such unequivacble statements, please explain the following questions so that us not so informed can understand.

1. IF Landis was using SYNTH TEST, how did the 6 previous tests and especially the 2 FOLLOWING TESTS not break the T/E ratio?

2. What would be the benefit of SYNTH TEST if the dose was so low that it did not produce enough to break a 4:1 T/E ratio in 8 tests?

3. How is it possible to have a T/E of 11:1 one day, NOT have it the previous day (he was tested after stage 16), and NOT have it 2 and 3 days later (Stage 19 and 20)?

*******************

The next step for Landis is ibvious to me -- He needs to request Radio Isotope testing of his other Samples -- Especially Stage 16, 19 and 20. If he was using SYNTH TEST IT WILL BE PRESENT EVEN IF THE T/E RATIO WAS WITHIN LIMITS --- This would be definitive, if it is present he is guilty, if it is not he is Innocent.

As a furthur backup he should also submit to a full hysical and blood work up to show that SYNTH TEST is not present in his body in any form.

I do not understand how ONLY ONE IF NINE tests could have been positive if he had SYNTHETIC TESTOSTERONE in his body. It does not make sense.

Exactly. I still do not believe this result as it makes no snese considering the 5 other tests he had.

I won't go into the details of my knowledge regarding testosterone. Suffice it to say that I know what I am talking about.

The only thing that anyone really needs to understand and it is really quite simple. No human body produces SYNTHETIC testosterone. Men and even women produce natural testosterone but NEVER synthetic testosterone. It's over. The fat lady is singing. Get over it.

Nice dodge.

Do you at least agree that IF he was using Synthetic testosterone it will show up in ALL the other tests? Regardless of what the T/E ratio was.

Seems to me that testing the other samples for thwe presense of SYNTH would settle it.

God only knows how sophisticated these drug labs have come up with these methods of avoiding detection. The fact that ANY synthetic testosterone appears at ANY time during the race disqualifies him. That's all that anyone needs to know. The O.J. defense will not work here.

Funny you should mention McGuire. I have four pristine Wheatie's boxes of him in my garage. I thought they would be worth something some day so I have hung onto them for about ten years now. I'll probably just toss them in the trash.

I'm a St. Louis Cardinal's fan from way back to the days of Stan Musial and Enos "Country" Slaughter and later Bob Gibson. I lived and died when they won and lost. And none of them used steroids either.

It is a sorry mess in professional sports today.

regarding your photos in 8

if you look at pictures of me at 40 and me at 22, the effect is the same and I never took roids.

I was 5-9 155 at 22 and 195 at 40 and no I was not fat at 40.

Caution about using wikipedia as a source. Information upload is uncontrolled and accuracy suffers.

Testosterone has no short term performance enhancing effect. Short term performance enhancers affect how cells metabolize and convert energy. Testosterone affects cell development and therefore requires time to be effective.

Lance Armstrong said this was the same lab that did shady things with his sample and got caught for it.

Hi gettheUNout-

"...It's very disappointing to learn someone has stooped so low to win in sports. Landis is the biggest fraud of the decade and needs to be stripped of his title..."

There is absolutely NO PROOF to illustrate that Floyd Landis cheated or took drugs. These have all been half-baked leaks and shaky allegations from anonymous sources who have been "stoking the fires" since the day of his Paris victory. Can't you see that their heads are nearly ready to pop overseas with Americans essentially ruling this race over the past decade? Floyd Landis tested clean in stages both before and after the one in question.

Lastly, there is no overnight performance benefit associated with steroid use. If any professional cyclist was looking for a quick fix, they would turn to some sort of amphetamine or an agent that boosted ability to utilize oxygen.

"So it looks like he was too dumb to come in second."

Had he come in second he wouldn't have won the tour. He won that stage by a ton of time.
