Maybe Mel could make amends. He could make a movie showing all the great things Jews have done through history and how Israel is set upon by the unrighteous. :^)

I was just mentioning in another thread that I was more than a little familiar with black out drunks. Pretty frightening overall as they are not your garden variety drunks. What I have heard many of them say had no relation to reality or their own life at all. But all of it said as if it were. In some cases, it seemed as if their brain was rewired and they were relating things they heard as their own personal experiences.
A friend of mine once recounted his entire experience training with PBY seaplanes in WWII. Only he wasn't born until the early 1960s. That experience was entirely his fathers and one I have no doubt he heard from his dad.
I've seen other people talking about relatives who do not exist. I've had some of these folks speak to me as if I were someone else entirely and I firmly believe they thought they were talking to that person.

---So if you know you can't control yourself, why not get yourself a body guard and start taking Antabuse now and then?---

That would make it harder, but an alcoholic would find a way to still drink, believe me.

He was said to have been in development on a TV series about Holocaust survivors, according to one of the tabloid TV shows I saw last evening.

Well his life would have really sucked had he killed someone. He needs to get his act together. It's not like he doesn't have the money. 50 years old is too old to be running around acting like an idiot.

maybe you are under estimating Mel's turmoil? Why would a man with his success be an alcoholic? He must have alot of conflict.

The rich and famous don't go to AA meetings.

I don't understand why some people can kick it and others can't. Part of it seems to be motivation. I've seen too much.

They say you have to hit bottom. With some they hit bottom and dig a deeper hole. Some use it to self-medicate. Some are in and out of treatment programs, and get free rent, housing, food stamps, bus passes, huge treatment costs paid for by taxpayers, and a lot of attention they don't get when they are sober. It gets frustrating trying to deal with them, and you can't really help them.

The surprising thing is that so many of them live to a ripe old age while some die of liver disease in their 40's.

After being surrounded by it most of my adult life, I still don't understand it. If the consequences aren't high enough, there's little incentive in overcoming it.

I'm surprised to find out Mel has this problem. I wish him well in overcoming it. Religion doesn't seem to help, at least on the surface.

So true. As someone with a little time under her belt now, I went to almost any lengths to drink.

Jim Beam made me do it!

Either that or the Jews.

He could have killed someone. It still doesn't excuse his behavior. He should have thanked the cops for saving his life. Given his extreme drunkenness, Gibson must never be allowed to drive again.

This is not true. I saw many in meetings - some of the most famous in Hollywood. Many actors and musicians do have private meetings, though, that aren't advertised. I worked on sets that had meetings and most studios have meetings during the day.

I heard him. Hateful words are nearly impossible to take back. Its not the sort of thing you can easily make amends for. I expected more of him, drunk or not, because of his high station. All I witnessed was what he really thought of Jews when his inhibitions were gone. And I'm not buying the "I was in a blackout" alibi. Trust me, if Gibson had said racist things about black Americans, his career would have been finished, kaput , over already. There's a certain line in America no one ever ought to cross.

Alcoholism is a disease. Alcohol burns the alcoholic like and acid. Success or failure, conflict, or depression are all beside the point. It is the alcohol that is killing the person. They can deal with whatever is left over once they put down the glass. Alcoholism is not for sissies.

I read on Drudge that ABC (I think) had decided not to run it. It was a four part series.

You should be around some drinkers out here in Arizona some nights. Especially in a group where someone had been in or seen an accident with an "uninsured driver" that day. Or,if someone had their house broken into,or had to wait in a long line at an ER.

The awful invectives uttered about Mexicans are horrifying. The funny part is that often it is legal Mexicans doing the spewing.

Mel is in my prayers tonite. As he should be with all proper-thinking folk. Crucify him if you must, but just remember that next time, it could be you -- or somebody you love -- needing help. When that happens, I hope everyone is there, ready and willing to help, in the hour of desperate need.

*That* is what being a decent human being is all about.

Suicide? How come Ted Kennedy never gets those urges? Or maybe that`s why he drove the car into the creek? But then why did he swim out? Oh yes, the bar didn`t close yet.

alcoholism. Nobody is talking about his alcoholism."

I said this the first time I read the account of his arrest. Have said all along, I hope he seeks some help.

The disease is real and it's a killer.
