Darrell Martinie, a.k.a. The Cosmic Muffin, died last night in his home in Saugus, MA of cancer. One of the first astrologers to have a regular radio presence, he started his broadcasting career on The Big Mattress with Charles Laquidara, the infamous morning show on CBS Radio's WBCN/Boston back in 1972.
The moniker The Cosmic Muffin came from a National Lampoon comedy bit known as "Deteriorata," which was a parody of the spoken-word recording "Desiderata."
The Big Mattress moved across town to Classic Rock sister station WZLX in 1996, and Martinie moved to the new location with the show until it ended in 2000. He was a daily fixture on the Big Mattress, ending each broadcast with the phrase, "It's a wise person who rules the stars, it's a fool who's ruled by them." His astrology reports were also syndicated to several stations in the Northeast, including Citadel Classic Rock WBLM/Portland, ME. Even though Martinie had been retired for a few years, he continued to do astrology reports for WBLM until recently, when his illness prevented him from working.
Martinie married his longtime partner Edward Boesel in 2004 after same-sex marriage became legal in Massachusetts. Martinie, a lifelong Republican, invited Massachusetts Governor Mitt Romney to his wedding. Martinie had been a volunteer for Romney's 2002 gubernatorial campaign. Romney, who opposes same-sex marriage, did not attend.
Charles Laquidara, now living in Hawaii, is saddened by the news of Martinie's death and tells R&R, "Darrell was one of the few blonde, Italian, gay Republicans the world had left. He reminded me of my Aunt Vera very cranky and curt. He was like the tough nun teacher you had in catholic school, but underneath, he had a heart of gold and was full of love. I will miss my friend very much."
A memorial service is being planned.
Steve Strick is a former DJ at WBCN and WFNX.

"Therefore, make peace with God, whatever you conceive Him to be: hairy thunderer, or Cosmic Muffin". The piece, narrated
by Norman Rose, IIRC, had the music--"You are a fluke of the universe/ you have no right to be here/ and whether you can hear it or not, the universe, is laughing behind your back"--
sung by the then-unknown Melissa Manchester.
Did he predict it?
I do remember one of BCN's ad jingos though....
"The "B" stands for Boston, the "C" stands for the ocean and the "N" stands for nitrous oxide".

Laquidara was Dwayne Glasscock, yes?
Yup,he was. Some of it was witty, but BCN's whole thing wasn't to my liking. My tastes in radio stations was more "mainstream" than that.
Don't forget Dwayne's wonder dog Yoop. (sp?)
A guy I worked with in Boston in the late 70's-early 80's loved the show. Personally never listened to him.
Because he was named "The Cosmic Muffin" perhaps ?
