Pet Peeve of the Week: It's HezBoALLAH. Get it?

Posted on 07/22/2006 9:11:02 PM PDT by AnnaZ

Is it minor? Is it just me? I mean, obviously we KNOW we're talking about crazed jihadists here and all, but just when did the A get dropped from Hezboallah (the Army of Allah)?

If it's stupid political correctness, let's just stop it now. Whether it's H-I-Z is unimportant, whether it's B-O or B-U is inconsequential, but losing the tie-in to "Allah" is dishonest.

They'll take money from Syria, they'll take money from Iran, they'll take your lunch-money if they can; but please let's not lose sight of who they really think they're working for.

Hezbo'Allah

When I point that out to people, it's like a little light bulb goes off in their heads-- "now I get it..."

I used the Jerusalem Post, thought they'd know. Last spelling I saw there was: Hezb'allah.

It's probably a result of sloppy speech spilling over into writing.

The best example I can think of would be the romance languages - how you can take a word that ends with E and one that begins with E and elide them together, so "de ella" would be "d'ella" and eventually "della."

FWIW, it's still pronounced in a way to make you happy - "hez-bawl-ah."

I've never heard anyone say "hez-bowl-ah."

NewsMax.com Wires ^ | Saturday, July 22, 2006 | NYT
WASHINGTON -- The Bush administration is rushing a delivery of precision-guided bombs to Israel, which requested the expedited shipment last week after beginning its air campaign against Hezbollah targets in Lebanon, The New York Times reported on Saturday. Citing U.S. officials who spoke on Friday on condition of anonymity, the Times said the decision to ship the weapons quickly came after relatively little debate within the administration, and noted in its report that its disclosure threatens to anger Arab governments and others who could perceive Washington as aiding Israel in the manner that Iran has armed Hezbollah. The munitions are...

Same here. Which is why I think this is at least of some little importance.

Words mean things. Without the "A" this word loses a LOT of its meaning, to the point of almost unintelligibility, at least to the uninitiated.

A couple of other posters have had similar examples, where the conflicting vowels result in the first, not the second one, being dropped. (As in your examples as well, Xen.)

Of=de=bo=d'=b'. Ella and Allah, the subjects, remain.

Love the graphic!

My new favorite Coulter quote (from this column):
When I told a New York Observer reporter that my only regret was that Timothy McVeigh didn't hit the New York Times building, I knew many would agree with me – but I didn't expect that to include the New York Times. And yet, the Times is doing everything in its power to help the terrorists launch another attack on New York City.

...

Their reaction to al-Zarqawi's death was to lower the U.S. flag at the Times building to half-staff. (Ha ha – just kidding! Everybody knows there aren't any American flags at the New York Times.)
= )

You are likely closest to the right format. First I am an Arabic speaker but not native I was taught by a Lebanese teacher. The meaning is not ""Army of God"" that would be Jayish Allah. Hizb or Hezb depending on where and by whom it is translated is the word for party as in political party. so it would be the Party of God.

Hiz B'Allah is the correct way to spell it. "Hiz" means party, and "B'" is a prefix that means under or of, and "Allah" is god. It is correct to separate the two words because in reality they are separate.
