Well Ill say they were right on firefox, NVU, Clamwin, and maybe Audacity but OO is note the better of MS Office and Gimp is certainly not as good as photoshop.

Sure. I use Open Office Writer all the time. It does everything Word does without that intrusive paper clip. Just be sure to save as a .doc file so Windows users can see it.

While Firefox beats the hell out of IE, and Thunderbird is a better email client, I'd hesitate to say that OpenOffice is "better" than MS Office. It does 99 percent of what you expect from MS Office, but still needs to file off some of the rough edges (printing an envelope in OpenOffice is a pain in the ass compared to MS Word, for example).
ClamWin for AV? No way. Clam is great for servers, but you're better off with free versions of AVG or AntiVir for the desktop.

Has anyone here tried openoffice ?I use it on machines where I don't have an MS Office license. It's fine, but it uses more resources than Office 97. I'll probably go with OO full time at home when I upgrade hardware.

Mepis 6.0 rc3 is the EASIEST thing to install and play that you will find. Way easier to install than windows, and far quicker. YAY! another MEPIS user! Mepis 6 Final is supposed to be released shortly... like yesterday... still waiting. :)

Read the article. It doesn't claim that. The article says this:
REPLACES: PAINT SHOT, PHOTO SHOP, DRAW, etc.
Quite simply the best.
So, if the article says GIMP replaces PhotoShop and the article says GIMP is "quite simply the best," how can you claim it doesn't say GIMP is better than Photoshop?
"The best" is a superlative, meaning better than all others.
The article also says this:
At each task, however, GIMP is as good or better than any commercial program.
Utter BS.

OK... I was looking at Windows, figuring most people are going to stick with what came with their machines when it comes to Operating Systems, but many people don't have a full office suite (maybe they have Works or Lotus, etc.). I see Mepis is quite costly ($300!), when there are free Linux operating systems out there, and a new windows-loaded computer can be had for under $400.

Umm.. yeah, wasn't Office 97 made for the C=64? I'm kidding, but it ain't fair to compare OpenOffice to '97.
