I hate drivers who go up to the very end of a lane marked as "closed" then try get into the open lane, ahead of those of us who actually changed lanes when we saw the sign.
AND yes, I will close up on the car in front of me to keep them out. They can wait forever as far as I'm concerned.
You and me both.
Your's is towards the top of my list too.
Agreed. My general rule is -- if you're doing something that implies that you're more important or in a bigger hurry than everyone else on the road, then you're p*ssing off other drivers with your actions.
A more frequent situation like this is the exit lane, where cars are stacked up, exiting the highway. There's a multitude of drivers bypassing the end of the line, jumping in at the last second. My beef is with them and the a-hole who let's them in. In fact, I'd like to see that (the jumping in part) be a ticketable offense.
Just think about it, you're at an amusement park. There's a 30 minute wait for a ride. Would it be okay for a late-comer to jump in a gap at the '5-minute' point? The same for the last second lane cutter. He just made every car behind him wait an extra 10 seconds. Times 50 cars in line, that's 500 seconds. Awesome.
I could go on for hours.

-- All that does is slow traffic down even more. Many road work areas now post signs to "use both lanes to merge point"
I actually ran a guy in a van off the road who tried to do that. After that happened I decided that it wasn't really that important, and that if someone wants to be a jerk on a road it will eventually catch up to him - I just don't let them bother me now.
Same thing with the merge lane. If you're slowed to a crawl and pass an intersection, conscientious drivers stay in their lanes, but here come the drivers down the merge lane trying to get to the end before actually merging. Orlando is notorious for that. Their merge lanes are way too long.
I hate to admit it, but I do shave sometimes on my commute. I've got a battery powered shaver. Hey, sometimes you just gotta shave time.
Most of the lanes aren't closed, they have a sign that says they are closed ahead. If everyone went into BOTH lanes and then gave each other courtesy to get in one after the other, the whole thing goes 3 to 4 times faster. But there is always one or two people who work their tail off to make sure no one gets in, "because those people should be as dumb as me".
I saw such a person get a ticket from a cop a few months back for trying to keep people from using that lane by weaving in and out slowly blocking the lane.
I hope he got a $100 fine.

I bet that makes you feel sooo good. You fix 'em!
