AN Italian magazine today sparked uproar in the UK by publishing a picture of the late Princess Diana in the wreckage of the car crash that killed her.
Harrods owner Mohammed Al Fayed, whose son Dodi also died in the car crash said he was "sad and angry" over the photo.
"This heartless pursuit of money brings shame on those responsible for producing such a vile production," he said.
"It makes me sad and angry that a magazine would reproduce an image of the princess as she clung desperately to life."
A photo of the princess being given oxygen at the crash scene appeared in the weekly Chi magazine.
Diana and her lover Dodi Fayed died in the crash in Paris in 1997, along with their chauffeur, Henri Paul.
Mr Al Fayed said the editor of the Milan-based magazine, and the author of a new book about the crash, had "no thought" for Diana's family, particularly her sons.
But Britain's domestic Press Association news agency quoted Chi editor Umberto Brindani as saying the photo - headlined "World Exclusive: The Last Photo" - was "touching" and "tender", not offensive.
"She is not dead in the picture but looks as if she is a sleeping princess," he was quoted as saying.
"I published the picture for a very simple reason - it has never been seen before. In my opinion it is not a picture which is offensive to the memory of Princess Diana.
"As a thorough and informative news magazine we have merely reported the publication of a book in France regarding Princess Diana's death."
The photo is taken from a book by crime writer Jean-Michel Caradec'h called Lady Diana: The Criminal Investigation.
It is said to also include photos of Diana taken shortly after the car crashed at high speed in a road tunnel as well as autopsy diagrams detailing the extent of her injuries.
Reaction to the publication in Britain - where there was an unprecedented public outpouring of grief after the princess' death - was one of outrage, with tabloid newspapers leading the charge.
Mass circulation tabloid The Sun carried a front-page headline "Shame on You", claiming there was "worldwide fury" at the publication and that Diana's sons William and Harry were "sickened and appalled".
The Daily Express, which has run regular prominent stories on the crash investigation, claimed London-based distributor IPN was considering whether it was acceptable to import copies of Chi into Britain.
Claptrap Charlie & his horse are happy.
This is awful. Can someone post the shot?
I haven't seen the picture and really don't care too but pics are posted every day of people injuried.
Not that there's anything wrong with that!
Whoever she was, she was some kids mother and I'm not going to bad mouth her. I don't like the double standard for the media and elite though.

Well..I'll give her that...she did her job..gave the Royals some good looking boys alright!
Alot of people get colonics....I have no idea why your would bring that up for this conversation.
That's real pleasant.
I never say stuff like that for fear that somebody will be saying that about me someday.
What is it about this phony baloney woman that makes people become spineless jellyfish...She was a whiny whore. It wasn't enough for her to be a Princess, beloved by the peasants. She was always bitching about something...Boo freakin hoo. That's how I feel now and that's how I felt then. She got what she deserved, sleeping with that Arab, and not just any Arab, the son of the Royal Family's arch enemy. JUST to embarrass the Royal Family. Now, that's real classy, right?
Hildy, I could not agree with you on every word you typed. I think she was a fraud that just happened to look somewhat good. She actually sickened me with her horrible morals.

It's awful.
If she had lived.....she would have not been the same person that is for certain....and that picture proves it....((shudder))
You're right -- it's just awful.
Looks like her make up is a mess.
That's the fake one from 1997.

You can tell because the emergency telephone number on the placard is "999" which is the British 911 number. The French one is "112". So it's a photoshop fake someone in Britain made up.
