I had something come up last night while teaching my wife how to play Texas Hold em'.
When the face up cards (Flop, Turn & River) come up with something like... well, last night for instance, a straight flush ..... how do you play your hold cards?
...and yes, I looked like a moron last night ...
Fighting Irish out - try the veal.
Bet and make her fold her split-pot hand. If she would have called you would have split the pot. The highest 5 cards out of the total 7 cards plays.
The highest five cards win whether it's the board or a combination of board and hold cards.... best five. If it's the board then it's a shared win among those that remained in the hand
Forming a Five Card Hand In holdem, players use the best combination of their two pocket cards and the five board cards to form a five-card poker hand. Unlike Omaha (another type of flop game otherwise similiar to holdem), players can use any combination of their two pocket cards and the five board cards. So players can use...
1. Both their pocket cards and three of the board cards. 2. One of their pocket cards and four of the board cards. 3. Neither of their pocket cards and all five board cards, which is called "playing the board". In fact, players must use the exact combination of cards to make the best possible hand. Even if a player miscalls his or her hand, they still are credited with the best possible hand they could make. The idea is that the cards speak for themselves, and "cards speak" is the term used to reference the idea that your hand is the best possible combination of cards available to you.
Another idea that is essential to all poker games where players use the best five out of seven cards (or six, or ten, or whatever) is that you only use five cards. If two players have the same hand, they don't go on to a sixth or seventh card to determine who the winner is.
Trying to appear as thought there was no question in my mind how to play that hand ... I did just that. She called me on it though and as a result, I did the dishes....but kept the winnings (heh..heh..heh) Thank you, oh gurus of the game .......
you have to play a hand like that by ear.
If your opponents have a possible higher straight flush, then you have to play it easy.
If you are more or less certain they can't beat you, try to get one of them to bet it up with you.
Is that the final word?
No, only if it's a low Straight Flush A 2 3 4 5 or Royal Flush on the table. If it's an open ended Straight Flush on the table, say, 6 7 8 9 10 and you hold a J, you win the pot.
I'd make a stab at the pot hoping that she'd think you have another spade in your hand for a higher flush.
But if you can't get a good read on the other person, check it down and split the pot.
Of course
I'm not worthy .........
in texas holdem you play the best 5 out of the 7 cards. If the 5 best are on the board then everyone has the same hand and it a split pot.
Nope. It's a push. The best 5-card hand wins. If the best 5-card hand is face-up on the table -- that's it. Split pot. That's a killer if you were leading in the hand, BTW.
If it were not a straight, straight flush, or full-house, then the kicker comes into play. Exceptions would be if your hole-card extends a straight to a higher card, or creates a straight-flush situation.
Unless a player has the NEXT HIGHER card in sequence and suit in the str8 flush IN THE HOLE, the BOARD plays and it's a split pot.
If someone is holding say a Queen of Clubs and the widow is showing a club straight flush to the Jack, you are holding the winning hand.

The 5 best cards NO MATTER WHAT
Exactly. I am not disagreeing with you. Four from the widow and the fifth card is in your hand.
Read my post 13 before you jump all over me.
What were your hole cards? Usually if there's a straight flush on the board--and I've only seen this once in B&M casinos BTW, you're essentailly playing for a split pot unless someone has a card that makes a higher straight flush.
I had a 10 of hearts and a 2 of diamonds....she held a King of clubs and a 3 of diamonds
I'm assuming here that the straight flush on the board was of diamonds?
