Phone use spans time of team party
In the middle of a Duke lacrosse party where a dancer said she was gang-raped for 30 minutes, a call was placed from her cell phone to a Durham escort service.
The 12:26 a.m. call to the service, Centerfold, lasted one minute, according to a copy of her cell phone bill reviewed by The News & Observer. It is unclear whether the call was a request for another job, a cry for help or something else, or even whether the accuser made the call herself.
But the accuser's phone records add some details to the chronology of the March 13 party, a drunken spring break bash that spawned a national controversy.
Neither prosecutors nor defense lawyers would discuss the phone records Tuesday. Neither the accuser nor a second dancer at the party could be reached, nor could representatives of Centerfold. Police Chief Steve Chalmers was out of town; his spokeswoman said he would not discuss the case.
Three players have been charged with first-degree rape, sexual offense and kidnapping: Reade Seligmann, 20, of Essex Fells, N.J.; Collin Finnerty, 19, of Garden City, N.Y.; and Dave Evans, 23, of Bethesda, Md. Lawyers for the players have proclaimed their clients' innocence and said no rape or sex occurred at the house at 610 N. Buchanan Blvd.
District Attorney Mike Nifong, whose handling of the case has undergone national scrutiny, has been adamant that the woman was raped at the party. Nifong has not given a precise timeline of when he thinks an assault occurred.

Guess we accessed them one too many times, LOL!
I guess they are looking for a way to pay AV's room and board.
Ruh-Roh!
Do we know when the CrimeStoppers poster/fliers were first published? Was Chalmers already MIA?
Yes, I expect the IDs of the three to be thrown out, maybe as early as Monday. But you never know with a state that has to have an innocence commission.
Still it is one thing to railroad some poor smuck in a low profile case. It is another thing to do it when the entire nation and world is watching.
The federal courts have let the NC system slide on no speedy trial, giving DA's power over judges etc. If a state does such things, they may get away with it until a case like this forces the federal courts to put a stop to it. How popular will Nifong be with other NC DAs after the Federal courts say an independent judiciary requires that the DA not have scheduling power over the NC judiciary?
Fresh activity on the NandO blog...

"That is why I risked what little dignity I have left to let others know"
Thank you. If there is any good that comes out of your ordeal, perhaps it can be that sometime some others will be spared the same ordeal.
I know that I will never again look at the justice system in the same way.
Chalmers runs before the excrement hits the swinging blade.
You certainly have a knack for putting a person on the spot!
LOL!

"Nifong confirmed that police took DNA samples from three students who said they were not present at the party."
"Given that the lacrosse team provided very little information to the police, they decided to sample all the Caucasian members rather than allow the people who weren't there off," he said.
"It's not especially common to take such a large sample, but it's not common to have a well-defined group of people in the suspect pool," Nifong said. "Here, we were able to identify assailants as Caucasian members of the lacrosse team."
No way out of it, imo. Nifong and the DPD knew there were non-LAX people at the party. Several of them, in fact.
So Nifong says that 3 non-LAX people were there, and he even took DNA samples from them.
Right after that, he says the suspect pool consists only of LAX players.
How did the 3 "get off" already?
AND, were the non LAX players included in the line up/photo array? After all was not the point to identify party goers?
Add the black LAXer to that equation too.
Thinks for the update on the N&O blogs. I really really enjoyed this line from a a day or so back:
"Kind of like putting the Lincoln assassination under theatre reviews."
No, they were not.
There were other line ups, too.
There is this one, which we know little about, on March 16th, apparently conducted by the DPD properly:

There was also another one with the post-it note attached where she did not ID Reade. I have seen this, but can't find it now.
Dukie, I have always enjoyed your posts and some private conversations as well. BUT...since you have revealed this I can't talk to you anymore.
Just kidding...political affiliations matter little when you are concerned about the truth and true justice. In all honesty I don't think either of the two major parties can claim a strong position on seeing that true justice is carried out.
Well the problem is that Nifong is a liar, but the press did not know it at the time this article was written. Notice how he pretends to the reporter that he not the court decides evidentuary issues like these.
And of course the three students who were not at the party could have been lacrosse players who are afterall students too. Or possibly the three "students" were her boyfriend and two drivers. Or maybe it was just a flat lie at the time and the two drivers and boyfriend gave up samples later. So I still do not think there were others at the party.
