Call adds mystery to lacrosse case (DukeLax)
News and Observer ^ | July 12, 2006 | Joseph Neff

Phone use spans time of team party

In the middle of a Duke lacrosse party where a dancer said she was gang-raped for 30 minutes, a call was placed from her cell phone to a Durham escort service.

The 12:26 a.m. call to the service, Centerfold, lasted one minute, according to a copy of her cell phone bill reviewed by The News & Observer. It is unclear whether the call was a request for another job, a cry for help or something else, or even whether the accuser made the call herself.

But the accuser's phone records add some details to the chronology of the March 13 party, a drunken spring break bash that spawned a national controversy.

Neither prosecutors nor defense lawyers would discuss the phone records Tuesday. Neither the accuser nor a second dancer at the party could be reached, nor could representatives of Centerfold. Police Chief Steve Chalmers was out of town; his spokeswoman said he would not discuss the case.

Three players have been charged with first-degree rape, sexual offense and kidnapping: Reade Seligmann, 20, of Essex Fells, N.J.; Collin Finnerty, 19, of Garden City, N.Y.; and Dave Evans, 23, of Bethesda, Md. Lawyers for the players have proclaimed their clients' innocence and said no rape or sex occurred at the house at 610 N. Buchanan Blvd.

District Attorney Mike Nifong, whose handling of the case has undergone national scrutiny, has been adamant that the woman was raped at the party. Nifong has not given a precise timeline of when he thinks an assault occurred.

Right, they said they were showing her pictures of people they thought were at the party. As someone said on CourtTV's message board, just weasle words to try to get around the rules of IDs.

Also, I am about to admit something that will probably make you all hate me (I hope not, but one never knows): I'm a Dem.

I welcome folks from all parties! How boring would the discussion be if we all agreed on everything? I think that is what sets FR apart actually. I've only been registered a short time, but posters must remain respectful and all viewpoints are welcome.

Back to the topic at hand: I'm not sure this case has anything to do with what party one belongs to other than the railroading of these boys is coming from a politically motivated DA.

geez. don't you want to just erase this site and start over in, say, a few weeks while the crazies find their way back to the freeper board? it's not like they help your ratings any.

I can not immagine with this case going on that editorial on innocence commission could be helping Duke limit the summer melt at all. This makes what might be a personal issue with an unelected DA over reaching for political purposes to win his first primary sound like a systemmatic problem.

Sadly, if Chalmers is clean and resigned because he valued his integrity, everybody and his brother (including me) will make an assumption of guilt.

(I guess that makes me a major hypocrite, but I do keep an open mind.)

I am wondering if his resignation has anything to do with the announcement that the ex-NCCU police chief resigned his post at KY.

NCCU has escaped scrutiny in this. Is someone starting to ask some questions about certain people associated with that school? Lots of interesting stories there.

I couldn't really follow the WTVD thread well. Was something missing? I do think it is hilarious that frepers are considered the crazy ones. That just shows who is smoking the dope!

I have thought for a while that his absence (as in our case) from this case was stunning. I keep having this nagging thought lately that he's out cleaning up loose ends if what is said about DPD's corruption/prostitution is true. His daughter may be a warning shot across his bow. By taking a hostage in the form of his daughter, his silence and cooperation is insured. I can't shake the thought. If this thought is like those I couldn't shake in the past, it might well be the case.

The report of the 1998 investigation was never released by NCCU, but top university officials were adamant that it cleared Vick. The report was in the court filings made this week.

Chambers. That name has popped up before.

I am glad you are a dem. It illustrates what I know to be true. Life does not revolve around partisan politics regardless of what they think inside the beltway.

Everyday, workaday Americans unite against injustice.

Besides, my in-laws are dems (not that there's anything wrong with that, LOL)

Can someone, anyone tell me what the difference is between the Durham CourtHouse Crowd and the Mob?

I spoke to both the issue of the black player and nonlacrosse players being at the party on the CourtTV thread. Here is what I said:

1. Other than Gottlieb saying once there were nonlacrosse players there, why hasn't anyone else said it. Why hasn't there been an interview with some nonlacrosse player who attended theh party? Why haven't we read about Nifong seeking to put heat on the nonlacrosse players who might be better candidates to break ranks? If these nonlacrosse players who were there are Duke students too why are they not included in Nifong's quest for home addressed and key card data? I think the evidence at this point is pretty strong there were only lacrosse players there that night, but maybe you can show me so reason to believe this is not the case?

2. Has anyone said whether the black player was there or not? I don't remember reading any such statement. The defense may be saving him as a witness, he might be trying to keep a low profile about this or maybe he was not there. I just don't know. I have never seen him quoted that he was not there. Have you?

I do agree she likely IDs people who were not in town and failed to ID people who were at the party. Wouldn't it be interesting if number 4 were a local kid and they were looking for out of town kids to lay this on?

Now you, not the person I was responding to on the CourtTv 3 hours a day board, have provided a link with the defense quoted as saying others were there. I still have my doubt, but maybe. Still what I said in point 1 holds, wouldn't they be the ideal people to squeeze? Maybe my last comment is right, they were locals who knew a local player or two and Nifong is looking for votes and picking on somone who votes in Durham, whose parents vote in Durham, whose friends vote in Durham was not what he wanted to do?

I don't think you are one of the crazy feepers, however, did you and PTBOR have anything to do with Durham County wanting to charge to view their tax records? ; )

The newly improved Durham County tax department Web site launched this week offers so much useful information that a county commissioner thinks there ought to be a charge for using it.

I know our/my story sounds crazy to anybody who hasn't been through it. That is why I risked what little dignity I have left to let others know that this isn't an aberration in Durham. Unless you have walked in the shoes of someone who has been through this (someone from a VERY upscale, white-bread community), you cannot understand or believe. Our family lives in one of the most affluent, educated suburbs of St. Louis, Missouri. I don't ever want anyone else to have to understand or believe it. We can fix this. This doesn't have to be an American story.
