Call adds mystery to lacrosse case (DukeLax)
News and Observer ^ | July 12, 2006 | Joseph Neff

Phone use spans time of team party

In the middle of a Duke lacrosse party where a dancer said she was gang-raped for 30 minutes, a call was placed from her cell phone to a Durham escort service.

The 12:26 a.m. call to the service, Centerfold, lasted one minute, according to a copy of her cell phone bill reviewed by The News & Observer. It is unclear whether the call was a request for another job, a cry for help or something else, or even whether the accuser made the call herself.

But the accuser's phone records add some details to the chronology of the March 13 party, a drunken spring break bash that spawned a national controversy.

Neither prosecutors nor defense lawyers would discuss the phone records Tuesday. Neither the accuser nor a second dancer at the party could be reached, nor could representatives of Centerfold. Police Chief Steve Chalmers was out of town; his spokeswoman said he would not discuss the case.

Three players have been charged with first-degree rape, sexual offense and kidnapping: Reade Seligmann, 20, of Essex Fells, N.J.; Collin Finnerty, 19, of Garden City, N.Y.; and Dave Evans, 23, of Bethesda, Md. Lawyers for the players have proclaimed their clients' innocence and said no rape or sex occurred at the house at 610 N. Buchanan Blvd.

District Attorney Mike Nifong, whose handling of the case has undergone national scrutiny, has been adamant that the woman was raped at the party. Nifong has not given a precise timeline of when he thinks an assault occurred.

Even if no rape occurred in the Duke case, even if that ugly incident was no more than a raucous party at which a bunch of drunken kids verbally abused a hired performer, it sounds like it was entirely within character for these kids and the friend they tried to talk out of trouble in D.C. Superior Court. Sorry, Father, but one incident often does make a gentleman's character.

I wonder what Mr. Fisher will have to say when he discovers Finnerty wasn't at the raucous party. Think he'll show any character and apologize? Something tells me he won't.

This article makes my blood boil.

Sanctimonious, pontificating windbag. No, he won't apologize, but he's having his fun now at the expense of someone who isn't yet in a position to defend himself. Just wait. Just wait. His retraction, should he be required to make one, will be buried on Page 32 of the Classifieds.

"It combines the question of, you know, 200 years of concern over exploitation of black women by white men of privilege."

From what I have seen and heard, black women are more likely to be abused by black men. Very few white men alive today would enter into a relationship of a sexual nature with a woman of color. They just don't think that way. I don't know about men 150 to 200 years ago (I'm old, but not that old), but from what I hear now, black women are far more intimidating and an unlikely choice among men of my age. I see very few interacial marriages between black women and white men. I see many more between white women and black men. The same is true of relationships outside of marriage -- but that's just here. I don't know about the southeast portion of the U.S.

What an interesting, informative read. I hope Nifong is held in derision by his fellow NC prosecutors forever, and feels their disdain at every DA conference he dares to show his smirking face.

My thoughts are since no one in the local media seems willing to tackle this story head on, it is up to us. I am not posting unfounded rumor because I believe it is fact, far from it.

Perhaps we could confirm or deny some of these rumors-God knows most everyone else seems to have their heads in the sand.
;;;;;;;;;;;;;;;;;;;;;;;;;;;;;;;;;;;;;;;;;;;;;;;;;;;;;;;;;;;;;;;;;;;;;;;;;;;;;;;;;;;;;;;;;;

The Media just refuses to investigate this thing. This is like the Dan Rathergate Thing. If anyone takes a look at the 2nd Driver's (Brian Taylor) interview in a major Paper - and they'll understand that this case is different. The N&O was totally content to not tell us what City Brian Taylor lives in, what he does for a living, and they apparently didn't ask him if he had sex with the AV the very night of the supposed crime. They didn't ask about alcohol or drug use by him on the AV. He "offered" that he didn't think she was drunk.

The point is, this case needs to have different standards - and I've seen this from the beginning. If you wait for Links in this case - you're going to be a skeleton sitting in a chair.

The News Media is not going to be part and parcel to keeping these privleged white (Reads arrogant, disrespectful, and amoral) MALES out of jail - regardless of the guilt or innocence.

Thanks for posting that, abb.

Everbody, take time to read this well-researched work on the identification procedure in NC. This blogger did work that a good investigative reporer should have done months ago.

Again, here's the link.

See, when the Media thinks about the Fresno Football players accused of Gang-Rape, they think of good manners.

If you PLEASE !

In the FRESNO FOOTBALL Gang-Rape accusation, the bail was reduced to $55,000 ??

Huh? Bail is often based upon the strength of the charges. There hasn't been enough time for the evidence to have been evaluated - the DNA certainly is NOT back - BUT, there's already a rush to lower their bail.

BAIL has been LOWERED to $55,000

I don't get it. I'm still waiting to see something on it on TV.

I've just emailed the Dept. of Justice about the disparity in the Shick and Finnerty cases.
And inquired as to whether or not the case might have been fixed in advance (the bartender/bouncer was not allowed to testify).
Six month's probation is in effect another way of saying, "We can still put you in jail any time we want. We can make up a violation and you are therefore convicted."
For yelling at someone (not even punching him).
Besides being outrageous, this is fishy.
Nearly all the AV's associates in Durham have been arrested--ex-husband, boyfriend, girlfriend, the cabbie, etc.
That's called "pressure".
Is Finnerty's absurd conviction and
sentence also part of applying that same "pressure"?
If so, is there collusion between Durham and DC?
Was the case fixed in advance, to produce just this result?
Somebody at the DOJ ought to ask a few questions, just to satisfy a few concerned citizens.
(Let's rock the boat a little, folks. This whole case has been an outrage.)

http://www.newsobserver.com/1185/story/443932.html

The SPECULATION is the Brian Taylor's interview was Managed by a Durham Lawyer - like Simeon - due to all the info left out of the article inexplicably.

What City does he live in? How old is he? What is his profession?

DID HE HAVE SEX WITH HER? Did He do drugs with her? Has he seen her do drugs? What were they drinking? How much? etc, etc, etc, etc.

It seems like in this SHAM interview - that limited information was provided and Taylor was sheltered in some way.

Seems like the point SOMEONE wanted to get out was that her Driver said she wasn't intoxicated when she was dropped off?

WHO would benefit from that story (that she reportedly was NOT intoxicated)?
