AL All-Stars Defeats NL All-Stars 3-2

Close game that was very well pitched until the end. Chicago's Paul Konerko singled with 2 outs in the ninth of Trevor Hoffman to ignite a two run rally that allowed the AL to take the lead.

NY Wankees' reliever Mariano Rivera came on to close the game. Carlos Beltran reached on an error to the 3rd baseman to add some drama then Rivera proceeded to induce a ground out to the Home Run Derby winner Ryan Howard then popped up Milwaukee's Carlos Lee to the second baseman Michael Young to end it.

Game was played in less than 3 hours which is amazing given all the commercial breaks.

It's really funny how ESPN guys were falling all over the best all time saves leader and the real one, without breaking a sweat, got a powerful Lee out and that home run derby King out. Good on you, Mo....

Exactly. Sports debates should be friendly. Anger should be reserved for political debates.

In the modern era (post free agency) the Wanks have won 6 World Series and lost 4. 21 of their WS wins came over 40 years ago or longer. Who cares what they did back then?

Where was Jason Schmidt? He has the nastiest stuff in the NL, and he's on the bench, while we watch a washed-up reliever throw change-ups in the 9th inning.

Where was Miguel Cabrera? One of the best young players in the game, and he doesn't get an at bat? If he loves David Wright so much that he can't take him out until the 8th inning, put Cabrera in LF you moron.

Nice job you friggin' hammerhead Garner.

money.

Rich teams from big markets do better than do poor teams from small markets. They buy teams.

Every St Louis, Cincinnati, Detroit, Pittsburg, Kansas City, etc. win in either League or World series over the years took a lot more long-term attention to detail, dollars, determination, and deftness than all the big-market wins put together.

The balance of pro football proves that.

Football has a salary cap and a huge TV contract which subsidizes the teams.

Baseball today is all about scouting and building with smart players.

Yanks need another starting pitcher. Matsui and Sheffield will be back in September.

Good point about Cabrera. And yes, Hoffman looked every bit as hittable as he was - single double triple ballgame.

Guillen showed smarts and imagination with his closer.

Sheesh! My Angels gave up on him and Eck. no wonder we're in the cellar.

Nah, my Mariners are in the cellar. But only by 1/2 a game.

As a transplanted Angel fan rooting for Seattle, I was pulling for Guerrero, Glaus, Eckstein, and Ichiro. American League rules!

Another feeble showing by the senior circuit. They should have finally won one, and then hear comes a closer collapsing (Phil Garner should know about that). But what can you do--I think WS advantage should be based on best record, in which case the AL team would always get it anyways.

Another 9th inning 2 out noone on rally with the star closer on the mound sinks Garner. It happened last week with against the Cards.

It happened more than last week against the Cards. It happens seemingly every time the Astros have a lead to preserve in the 9th (not being entirely fair to Lidge, but he has been abysmal this season).

Strangely, I really like the olden-time Yankees. Lou Gehrig is one of my heroes. I just can't stand the modern version. Don't know why.

The Angels are my #2, so I'm feeling a sore spot too - my co-worker is a Dodgers fan and he's been gloating to me for months. Thanks to Vladdy's shot off Penny, I will be able to hold him off for a day or so...

I am resigned to the Sox losing the Division since the Tigers don't seem to be folding. However, the Sox have the Tigers number head to head so I expect to beat them in the playoffs if they can survive Boston.

NL protecting a 2-1 lead in the 9th inning. Ground ball goes by Cabrera at third, Cabrera a defensively-mediocre OF/3b. Meanwhile, the best defensive third baseman on the planet, with the most range--Scott Rolen--is sitting on the bench. Rolen makes that play quite often.
