On a typical day at Tellme Networks Inc., Jackson snores, Penny spends time learning Chinese and the bosses and workers are delighted.
Penny, a Labrador Retriever, and Jackson, a bulldog, are part of an effort at many U.S. companies to allow pets in the workplace. One survey shows nearly one in five U.S. companies allow pets at work.
Millions of Americans believe pets on the job lower absenteeism.
Tellme project manager Jaymer Delapena said co-workers know Jackson, famed for his loud snores, by name, and some like to take the dog into meetings.
"I'll be walking past a conference room and look inside and my dog is sitting in a chair around a table," he said.
Interest in pets at work is growing, say organizers of "Take Your Dog to Work Day," set for this Friday.
Heather Galler believes in the concept so much that she founded her own company where workers are encouraged to work from home and be with their pets.
The policy has drawbacks, she conceded. "I'm talking to you in the bathroom because I don't want my dogs to start barking and interrupting our conversation," she said from her home office in Cape Coral, Florida. "They can get a little loud."
Pet-friendly environments can pay off in a competitive job market, said Phil Carpenter, vice president of marketing at Simply Hired, an online jobs database that has added an option for job-seekers to select a dog-friendly company.
More than 400 companies -- among them Google Inc. -- have listed themselves as dog-friendly, he said.
"Take Your Dog to Work Day" is intended to raise awareness of animals in shelters that need homes, said John Long, spokesman for organizers Pet Sitters International.

ROFLMAO
Boss thinking: "Bringing my 120lb rotty to work might increase production."
I take my dog to work very often. Some clients request she be there!
People bring their dogs to work everyday at my office. It wouldn't be so bad if they were potty trained. Nothing like a salesrep trying to entertain a client all the while fido is in the hall taking a dump and scooby and daisy are getting it on in the board room.
I don't believe I'll ever have a dog.
Employee thinking: "Bringing my pit bull to work will keep the boss out of my area"
Leave your dog at home. If necessary, get your dog a nanny or take the dog to a kennel.
If that's good enough for your kids, it's certainly good enough for your dog.
Homer ~loved~ it when I took him to the office last month!
Dogs in the office? How about dog hair, sanitation, and noise to start? How about if I brought my 2 Jacks, Lincoln and Polk, to the office?
Pardon the pics...
What a horrible place to work. Is no one in charge?

Take your pitbull to your job at a child care center today!
I used to bring my dogs to work alot when I worked for a vet, but of course, it was appropriate. I also used to bring a dog to work about once per semester when I was teaching. It was a big hit with MOST of the kids (there was often at least one who would jump on the desk and scream, occasionally they were actually petting the dog by the end, but I didn't force them to get near the dog, and did not let the dog off leash unless all of the kids agreed). We always used the dog in some way during class. For instance, when we were doing bacteria cultures, we used a swab from the dog's mouth, and one from a human mouth to compare which had the most bacteria. It was always fun.

I don't believe you for an instant.
Hey, they're pretty cute!

Sure - the owner of the company - guess who's dog shows up at least twice a week.....
I suppose I wouldn't be so sour about it if I wasn't allergic to the hair. I just have to stay on allergy meds. I feel sorry for mr. owner when and if we ever move out of this office - the floors are horrid. I brought my own air freshener so I don't have to smell the little beasts.
The dogs are cute as buttons, but jee wiz they are a headache for me.... wonder if I can sue?? /jk
I think I would find a different job! I know that may be easier said than done, but your boss sounds like a true jerk.
