Italy beat France, saving French linguists the troublesome task of inventing a word for "victory."

The players are too exhausted to play additional minutes. For the finals, I think if it ends in a tie, they should play the next day.

Sure was. He's probably crying to French newspapers right now, arguing that he was provoked and whining about the card.

Walkin' past the trophy on his way out of the stadium. What a disgrace.

Cheers to Germany for a fantastic job hosting the World Cup and to the Italians. The best team today won the match.

I very much doubt that South Africa will do nearly as well.

That means we're co-champions, right?

I live near the Italian section of our town. Fireworks going off and horns blaring right now in my neck of the woods.

Wasn't that the one where Baggio fanned a PK over the goal?

Well, at least these bad announcers will be off the air for a while....although ESPN has locked up the rights for a long time.

Yup.
Even more impressive, Italy only conceded one goal in free play (penalties aside) during the entire tournament, and that was against the USA.

It's dumb because we suck at it?

#1. We don't "suck" at it. We're not among the best in the world, but we don't suck. (We tied Italy, the eventual champions, even though we were a man down for half the game. Teams that "suck" don't do that)

#2. There are some very real problems with world soccer. Problems that many informed, rabid worldwide soccer fans acknowledge.

One is the pervasive diving. Soccer is such a low scoring game that a dive that leads to a penalty kick or an opposing player being sent off can very well be the deciding factor. A game that can so easily be decided by rampant cheating is suspect.

Penalty kicks as the deciding factor of a game (especially one as important as the World Cup) is like deciding the World Series by a home-run derby. Wouldn't you call that "dumb"? Most baseball fans would.

Has ABC already stopped broadcasting? They're not showing the celebration and the awarding of the Cup?
