Who is assigned to referee the final match?

Saw Markus Merk ref an earlier match. He is a great referee. Hope he is assigned to the last match. it wou;ld honor him and Germany for the overall excellence of the presentation of the World Cup. Merk does not seem to tolerate 'diving'. With the teams knowing this, they may be much less inclined to play-act.

The Japanese ref did a very good job in the 3rd place match.

Yep, the Japanese yesterday was very good. Merk is not the ref today, he just whistled 3 games - disappointing, especially while others had up to 6 matches. Today´s Referee is Elizondo (ARG), who had also lead the opening match between Germany and Costa Rica.

"Please remember that they won it in 2002, 1994 and have been in the final in 1998."

The 1994 final still hurts with Baggio kicking the penalty over the crossbar. He had come off the injury list and should have stayed there.

Anyway, just wanted to say....

Forza Azzurri!

jveritas,

despite the envious detractors, Brazil is, and will continue to dominate football. Don't listen to the nincompoops.

"I'm just going to stay calm before the final song at the big dance."

Fratelli d'Italia, l'Italia s'e' desta...

I wish I were at the big dance, but rest assured that I'll be singing along from here.

Forza Italia! Make us all proud and the Frenchies bite their tongues.

Could be that with both finalists being from Europe, FIFA thought is would be wise to assign a ref from outside Europe. Could also be that with Germany advancing so far that it was better to not involve Merk in the later matches. I don't think anyone should look at Merk's three games as a snub; more of a realization that the German side advanced so far.

"Who is assigned to referee the final match?"

I'd make book it WON'T be Jorge Larrionda (Uruguay)
;)

and yes, Kamikawa ? the Japanese ref, did a great job.

Today´s Referee is Elizondo (ARG), who had also lead the opening match between Germany and Costa Rica.

Being assigned to a quarterfinal and the final must be quite an honor for Elizondo and Argentina.

Is there a link to listen to a British site where we can get some good commentary. Brent Mushberger sucks. Foudy is OK, but the others are insufferable.

I very much enjoy how each of the azzurri (well maybe not Camoranesi) sing Fratelli d'Italia in full voice. I think this is President Ciampi's finest legacy.

Honestly, why is going off about Jesse Owens. Does every event have to be about how great our athletes are ?

It's like Brent knows nothing about soccer so he will talk about what he does know. Where's Giorgio Chinaglia ?

And France scores on a penalty kick induced by a phantom foul. Pathetic.

Wow, that's something for the first few minutes:

Henry almost knocked out.
Great chance for Italy.
Penalty kick for France.

France 1 - Italy 0

I couldn't see a foul, that's why I am not a ref....

Since nobody said it before:

France - Italy 1-0

Zidane makes the penalty kick in.
