DURHAM, N.C. -- Police in Durham have arrested an 18-year-old in connection with a quadruple shooting Wednesday evening that left a teenager dead.
Justin Perry, 18, of Kittrell, turned himself in to police early Thursday morning. He was charged with the murder of 17-year-old Joseph Towah from Drew Street in Durham.
Authorities are looking for 20-year-old Darien Taylor in connection with the shooting that occurred near the 600 block of Gray Avenue in Durham. He has also been charged with Towah's murder.
The victims, teenagers ranging in age from 15 to 18, were rushed to Duke University Medical Center. Two of the wounded victims suffered life-threatening injuries, and the third was treated for a gunshot to his arm, authorities said. One of them died a short time later.
Witnesses told police two men simply walked up to the victims and opened fire. Although the shooting occurred in daylight around 6 p.m., authorities said no one was able to provide a good description of the suspects.
"It's always difficult when we can't get information," said Kammie Michael, the spokeswoman for the Durham Police Department. "We know somebody saw something because it happened in broad daylight."
The shooting shattered what had been a relatively quiet year for this type of violence.
Some residents fear that gang violence in the city could be on the rise, the shooting occurred in an area know to be a stronghold of the Crips.
The slaying was the seventh homicide in Durham this year. By contrast, 18 murders were recorded in the city the first half of last year.
Local authorities tried early this year to broker a truce between rival gangs. But a rape investigation involving the Duke University lacrosse team has been the focus of the police department in recent months, and the truce fell apart.
Resident Georgia Alston said she's afraid Wednesday's shooting will ignite a new wave of gang violence.
"I just don't want to be around it," Alston said. "It just doesn't make much sense -- why they do things like this."
Anyone with information on Taylor's whereabouts is asked to CrimeStoppers at 919-683-1200.
Pinging the DukeLax List. New thread this morning...

Is it just me, or does this statement imply the Durham PD is so involved with a single rape allegation that an otherwise controllable gang situation has been allowed to get out of control? Sometimes I have to wonder if reporters actually read what they write!
That's what it says...
Another Durham shooting, another day.
I often wonder if reporters can actually read or write at all!
I guess that's in East Durham. I had a family friend who told me he felt safer when he was in Vietnam than he did when he was a cop in East Durham.
Just great. So a non-rape of a hooker has taken police attention away from the gang activity in Durham and resulted in deaths.
Wow, Duke rape trial... Minorities and gangs hurt the most...
This says it all.
This goes far above the Durham PD. Maybe as high as the Governor himself.
Cousin, maybe?

If I had to guess why the Durham PD has had Murchison and McNeill arrested and jailed, it is to put pressure on them to shut up about the rest of CGM's client list.
A list that is reputed to contain several high-level Durham officials (read Durham PD and city council members)
This is also likely the reason for the mass arrest last week of the majority of Durham's other prostitutes.
Of course that info will eventually come out. And Mark Gottlieb may even go to jail before it is over.
{There is at least one Durham Sun reporter who has hinted to me that they know the names and have not been allowed by publisher Bob Ashley to print them).

I saw that. I need to do a bit of digging.
First I've heard of LaJuana ...

Ex-Husband in Jail - he's no angel, probably had a story to sell and Nifong got wind of him shopping a story. He can't do any harm to Nifong in Jail.
Current Boyfriend in Jail - Matthew Murchison. Arrested sometime in spring (after the alleged attack). He's an ex-con and if he ain't talkin' to Nifong, he can sit in jail and he can't hurt Nifong's case in there.
Many sites are now saying that the AV's, False accuser, what have you- best friend (female) named LaJuana has been arrested and is jail unable to post bond. Word from Durham is that she was looking for $25,000 for a story about the False Accuser. One of the Investigators in the D.A.'s office brought her up on worthless check violations and some other charge. Her story is locked up with her now, and certainly no one will pay her now that she's damaged goods.
The D.A.'s office is spending an enormous amount of time and energy on this case. The Woman's family claims that she has been in police protection since mid-March. 2 police men assigned to her full time. I'd like to see the total bill, but we probably never will. The Newspaper people won't do it, that's for sure.
She has several surnames she uses:
LAJUANA HOBBS
LAJUANA B HOBBS
LAJUANA D HOBBS
LAJUANA DAYNISE HOBBS
LAJUANA B HOBBS-MCNEIL
LAJUANA MCNEIL
LAJUANA H MCNEIL
LAJUANA HOBBS MCNEIL
LAJUANA KENNET MCNEIL
Sorry for the caps--too lazy to retype.
