My sweet little cocker spaniel dog was nearly killed by two pitbulls who jumped a fence to get to her. She crossed a nearby driveway and they got her.
By the time my neighbors got the dogs off, (within seconds) the pits had grounded my dog, tore out her left eye, dislocated her left leg, and left ten gaping wounds in her body. She couldn't move or even howl in pain. That's how I found her.
My dog weighs 40 pounds. She's large for her breed. She's AKC registered and pedigreed. She was a very beautiful dog.
This happened 10 days ago and I'm still stunned at the viciousness of the attack. I don't know if a human child would have survived what those animals did.
I have since learned that homeowner's insurance will not cover pitbulls.
I'm posting this as a warning and also as an invitation to comment.
She's doing better, thank you. It's kinda sad to see her cock-eyed. She walks into things sometimes -- loses her perspective. Still gimps. Probably always will.
I am glad to hear it. Give her a pat on the head for me.
If possible, I'd stealthily neutralize the threat. I had to do this some years back in my first home. We had a fenced in yard and our dogs were always in it and never ran loose. Our next door neighbors had two pit bulls in their own fenced in yard that constantly tried to get at our dogs, digging at the fence, trying their mightiest to jump it, and lunging to the point where I had to routinely repair the fence because they nearly tore it down. Our daughter was a toddler at the time, and one day as she was playing in the yard, one of the dogs lunged at the fence trying to get at her and knocked her down resulting in a pump knot on her forehead. I was livid, and my wife wanted to call the cops, but I told her I would take care of it that night. My next door neighbors were renters and the hard partying type. They went out for a night on the town, and I broke out my tree stand and bow, climbed a tree and dispatched the two predators in about 5 minutes. I then climbed the fence, removed the carcasses, and hauled them off in my truck. I'm as much an animal lover as anyone you'll find, but I couldn't help but LMAO when I heard them calling and whistling for the dogs at 2 am when they returned.
According to the Pit Bullers you were supposed to sustain an attrocity on your daughter or your dogs before dealing with the situation.
"Blame the deed, not the breed" as they always say.
I felt that the pump knot on a two year olds head was atrocity enough to justify my actions, even though I was leaning heavily towards doing it anyway before that happened. I had already made a quiet phone call to a friend in local govt, and he told me that there wasn't much they could do since the dogs were in fact kept inside a fence. Every time I had to repair the fence, I had to get a baseball bat, stand next to the fence and wait for the dogs to try and attack me so I could lay a good lick on them to subdue them long enough to fix the fence without getting bitten.
I considered several options before going with the arrow method. I felt that just having them disappear into the night was the best option. I ended up having to have that section of chain link fence re-strung by professionals at a cost of about $400, so to say I'd had it up to my eyeballs is an understatement. Looking back, I'll never put up with a situation like that for that amount of time ever again. I should have done what I did months before I actually did it.
