One of the good things about writing an opinion column is that you hear back from readers with their opinions, too.
Sometimes they will write about their own philosophy of life, their belief system, or their heartfelt concerns. Other times, they will encourage me to read a particular writer or look into a particular subject. That means I am constantly being challenged to absorb new information and points of view.
While on occasion these friendly suggestions are meant to re-educate me (”War is bad, peace is good,” in case you didn’t know) — more often they are legitimate invitations to learn about some aspect of the world that might be an interesting topic for this column.
Such was the case in recent weeks after I wrote several columns on the topic of illegal immigration. In one of those columns I referred to the McCain-Kennedy-Bush “reform” plan as a proposed “merger” with Mexico, and lamented that the “shareholders” of the United States had not been consulted about the merger.
I chose the language intentionally to dramatize the point that U.S. sovereignty was on the verge of being given away, but I thought the idea of a merger was a colorful exaggeration that would be useful to make my point. Now I find out, thanks to the help of several readers, that it was no exaggeration at all, and that the McCain-Kennedy reform plan is not the starting point for the merger, but just one more steppingstone in a path being built for several years.
It has the sound of a global thriller, right? People in high places plotting to advance their own self-interest while the little people go about their business oblivious to the great forces at work all around them...

The conspiracy kooks will take some thing like a big new super highway and turn it into a certain sign that the US + Mexico are merging. PURE IDIOCY. PURE "I FORGOT TO TAKE MY MEDS".
The endgame here is an integrated economic space with virtually open or open borders and total portability of labor. Not a political merger. Thats why articles like this are worthy of ridicule even when those that ridicule it most viciously are usually either in denial or disingenuous. Many of them would defend a non political merger.

This is not what's being sold to the American people. Don't you think that maybe we the people ought to be consulted and told plainly what is at the bottom of twenty million "undocumented workers" with more on the way?
We've been told that the problem is just to big. They can't patrol such an enormous border, and anyway we can't deport 20 million people.
When do you think we might hear from an elected official, "the endgame here is an integrated economic space with virtually open or open borders and total portability of labor"?
How do you think that'll go over right before the upcoming elections? Do you think everyone will be relieved that it's not a "political merger"?
