Kentucky Derby winner Barbaro continues to please veterinarians with his progress in his recovery from surgery to repair his shattered right hind leg sustained in the Preakness Stakes on May 20.

The colt remains in intensive care at the George D. Widener Hospital for Large Animals at the University of Pennsylvania's New Bolton Center in Kennett Square, Pennsylvania. "Barbaro continues to improve; he is maintaining his weight and his coat looks good," said Corinne Sweeney, D.V.M, executive director of the Widener Hospital. "I would say he is a happy, healthy horse."

I dont think that the cast on the left leg is for raising the level. He has a special shoe on that is absorbing any extra weight he may be putting on that leg to compensate for what he is taking off of his injured leg. The wrappings up top is to support his ligaments and tendons from any undue stress from any extra weight as well. It is not really a cast though, since Micheal Matz has been there to change it a few times. It seems to be working, and hopefully continues to work.

Yup. He is a VERY well looked after Horse! That's what a healthy properly trimmed tail SHOULD look like. LOL

You are right it isn't a cast per say. And it does raise the level of the other hoof, so that it matches the other leg. It is done to minimize the risk of a certain affliction that effects horses that can not put equal weight on all legs. It is also a shock absorber, you are right on that as well!

Barbaro had a second cast change today. He recovered nicely. Also, the chief surgeio, Dr Dean Richardson said that they changed a couple of bent screws and put in three new ones across the pastern joint. He also has an abcess in his left foot, on the heel, but they are not worried about that. It is treatable. New pictures will be added to the University of Penn.edu website Wednesday.
