I'm not saying go with 98SE.
It was the most stable of it's day, but with today's hardware, software and security climate, it's simply not sufficient. I'd recommend XP.

I'd go with Linux before I went with 98. Some of the newest distros are almost as easy as XP to set up. I have had pretty good luck with
Gentoo.

Actually, what RF said was:

in which frankly the phrase "Go with XP" leads me to believe RF is not endorsing 98.
