World Cup Scores Only Small Audience

World Cup Scores Only Small Audience
Only 6% Following Tournament Very Closely

Despite a high level of media coverage for the World Cup soccer tournament, three-fourths of Americans (78%) are not following the action very closely if at all. A Rasmussen Reports survey of 1,000 adults found that just 6% are following the tournament very closely.

Nine percent (9%) of men are paying close attention along with 3% of women.

The Super Bowl remains the biggest sport championship in terms of fan appeal. Thirty-five percent (35%) of Americans say it’s their favorite championship to watch. The World Series is the only other championship to reach double digits—12% of adults say it’s their favorite.

One-fourth of all Americans (25%) say they don’t want any sports championships.

Despite the general lack of interest in the World Cup by the US audience, the soccer tournament is more popular than the NBA basketball championship and the NHL’s Stanley Cup hockey title. Both of those events were being held at the same time as the World Cup.

Fourteen percent (14%) of Americans say they played soccer in an organized league at some point in their life.

Fifty-two percent (52%) of Americans believe there is a professional soccer league in the United States (and they’re right).

The survey was conducted before the U.S. soccer team was eliminated. However, few were surprised by the lack of success--just 5% of the nation’s adults thought it was very likely the U.S. team would win the tournament.

The national telephone survey of 1,000 Adults was conducted by Rasmussen Reports June 19-20, 2006. The margin of sampling error for the survey is +/- 3 percentage points with a 95% level of confidence.

He made a stupid comment MLB had 450 000 fans attend games last night. So his comment makes no sense.

You might be right, we'll see. I hope not. I think one of the reasons for the bad ratings was until games 3-7 it was on OLN.

I'm not convinced about the soccer-poverty angle. Consider stickball, sandlot football, pickup game of bsktball; not much equipment needed for those. I think soccer in the US is more of an elitist sport - it is expensive to play at the competitive level. Travel teams, highly-paid coaches, camps, training, etc. The US does not have the infrastructure around club teams and organizations that other countries have.

In contrast football and baseball have stronger high school and college offering. I think another poster had it right that many other countries just don't have sports leagues like the US: NASCAR, NBA, NFL, but they do have soccer, so they focus on that sport.

Interested in your thoughts kabar and AGP.

[ The football proponents seem to feel threatened by soccer, the world's biggest and most played sport. Why? ]

I'm not into any sports, except fishing.. Soccer is as BORING as basketball, football I can stand.. sometimes..

A while back, someone bragged to me about a football game drawing some 70,000 fans. I think Kansas speedway is the only track with less than 120,000 seats.

Um, for one thing football is played on a field which is somewhat less in size than the average NASCAR race track. Plus it is really, really hard to put people on the infield as they do at car races. Most attendence figures are restricted by the number of seats, period. And last but not least, there are on any given Sat. or Sun. a LOT games being played than the usually 1 or 2 NASCAR events and the games are played in the same cites multiple times a year not just once a year. Granted, there ARE a LOT of NASCAR fans but come on, get real. It still does not compare to football, baseball or basketball in fan attendence.

Yeah, nothing tops the NFL at the moment. It's the only pro sport I watch consistently at the moment. Go Cowboys!

Game 6 drew a 1.8 in prime time on NBC. Still terrible and game 7 was the lowest rated Cup game 7 ever.

Iif you watch the replays of the old (pre-1995, or so) Cup events, it's cool to see the relative lack of stands (compared to today) at places like Bristol, Daytona, and Richmond.

Check out Dale Jr.'s show "Back In The Day," on Speed Channel if you're into this kind of thing.

Have a Nascar race in every city on the same day where there is a NFL football game and Nascar will get killed on attendance.

Sorry dude, but that's a crock of islam. I've seen weekends in Dallas where the Cowboys play the same weekend as Nascar and I-35 is STILL a parking lot when the Nascar weekend shows up.

When 30K + fans are willing to spend 12 hours on a highway to get in to see their Nascar drivers, that's saying a lot.

Game 6 had a 1.8 in NC or nationwide?

It's in the rules. A player who spends too much time on the ground (acting or otherwise) must be carried off, and stay off the field until the ref allows him back on. In theory, it gives a temporary advantage to the other team. In practice, it doesn't work.

"Scoocr, football, NBA would drool to get 100,000 rabid fans in every sunday."

You're joking, right? That's 100,000 people going to the one and only race on Sunday. Add up all of the people who go to NFL games on any given weekend and NASCAR becomes an insignificant speck.

Okay, you win. Soccer is the most dangerous sport ever played.

LOL!

Baseball is a great sport and not that dangerous! I was unlucky, I guess. I also coached for three years...safety is a BIG concern for the kid's leagues (lawsuits and all)

We used steel spikes when I was in elementary school. Didn't use full helmets.

I love baseball. If it hadn't been for that rotator cuff tear, who knows? (we all think we coulda if we hadda)

You should really have read-on before commenting. One of the minor themes of this thread is that soccer is an "elitist" sport. If that is true, then why do you sound like such a soccer fan?
